Keep Alexis Scott at the Baldwin School

Keep Alexis Scott at the Baldwin School
The Issue
Ms. Scott has helped revitalize Baldwin's theatre program and even in her short time here made everyone who has even spoken with her feel supported and seen. She prioritizes the well-being of her students and has helped provide stability in a position that has been in a state of perpetual turnover for years. Since starting at Baldwin this year, she has made the basement black box a nice space, taught drama and film classes for seven different grades, helped students learn how to mentor each other and contribute to designs, directed all school productions to great responses, worked with other teachers and departments to get cross-curricular programs going, and listened to the students to find out what they need to be increase participation in the drama program. She also allowed students to freely express themselves, allowing students to create and play characters who are of all different genders and sexualities.
However, despite all of her positive contributions to the Baldwin Community, the Administration is forcibly removing her from her position for "poor classroom management," which anybody in one of her numerous theatre classes and the community at large could tell you is a blatant lie.
The Baldwin Administration has told her to keep quiet about her departure so it would appear like she is leaving of her own free will. They also will not specify on their allegations of the aforementioned "poor classroom management" and "poor judgment of boundaries."
The lack of disclosure about reasons for dismissal in the face of Ms. Scott's very successful first year in the position has caused many students to believe that her removal is because she is an openly queer woman on a campus where that is not common. She has multiple stickers, pins, and other accessories that feature rainbows and pride flags. Although it is not explicitly stated or proven, it seems to everyone in the community that this removal stems from a place of bias and prejudice.
Another suspected cause for her removal is the fact that she advocated for a part time staff member to run the Middle School theatre program, and other resources for the drama department.
I urge you to sign and share this petition to fight the hate present in our school and pressure the Baldwin Administration to keep Alexis Scott at Baldwin.
