Keep Accessible Healthcare Products Available for Transgender Students
The Issue
As reported by Upstate Today, "CLEMSON — A group of Clemson University Republicans are celebrating the removal of feminine hygiene products from the men's bathroom out of R.M. Cooper Library.
The Clemson College Republicans announced on social media Sunday it had learned South Carolina House Rep. April Cromer, who represents Anderson and parts of Pendleton, had gotten involved in removing the tampon and pad dispenser from the men's bathroom.
"We're super, super glad that these were taken down," group treasurer Fish Belk told The Journal. "Ultimately that was our goal — for people to realize, 'Hey, this is ridiculous.' Also, we were completely caught by surprise by this, this (removal) was totally unexpected. … This is shocking. Good on them."
According to PBS: "The FDA regulates and classifies menstrual products as medical devices..." (Zureck, 2023)
This action, backed by the Clemson University administration, has intentionally limited access to medical devices for students within the University. By signing this petition, we hope to persuade the University Administration to leave the services, which have already been paid for, in place to benefit the student population who require them.
Inside Higher Ed posted an additional update on 09/29, which outlines more details on the background and current happenings regarding this event.
