Keep Abacus Kindergarten at its current site

Keep Abacus Kindergarten at its current site
The Issue
An open letter to ESF,
We are writing to you as a united community to urge you to reconsider the planned closure of the Abacus site scheduled for June 2027. This site is more than just a building— it is a crucial bridge for children to the natural world, a trusted server of our community and a place where an extraordinary team cultivates curiosity and a joy for learning on a daily basis.
Abacus offers unique outdoor spaces that can’t be replicated anywhere in Hong Kong. Generations of students have flourished here, experiencing hands-on learning that connects them directly to nature. Closing this site would mean losing a vital environment where children learn beyond the constraints of a classroom lost in a concrete jungle.
We are concerned that the proposed alternative location in Olympic does not reflect the same values of environmental connection and community-centered learning that can be found at Abacus. A school cannot reasonably relocate to such a distant venue and expect parents to subject young children to long daily bus rides. This undoubtedly disrupts family routines and undermines the well-being of these young learners. On top of this, all of the additional proposed alternative locations possess further significant logistical challenges, again making daily commutes longer and less accessible—further distancing children from the community that supports them. For many, this simply isn’t an option, forcing families to look at alternative options outside of the ESF network.
We also must highlight the value of the people who work tirelessly at Abacus. The passionate and dedicated team bring expertise and care that make this school truly exceptional. Their commitment has nurtured a culture of inclusivity, enthusiasm, and respect. The trust families place in these educators underscores the school’s irreplaceable role in our community.
This open letter is supported by current, past and prospective families who have come together to oppose the relocation of Abacus to Olympic and the closing of this important site, temporary or otherwise. We propose site alterations and renovations to the existing location that could take place over the summer months in order to allow Abacus to continue serving as a foundation for community, discovery, and connection.
We very much look forward to your response so we can move forward in a collaborative way, exploring every possible option to keep this special place in its home.
Sincerely,
Past, present and prospective families
