The issue

Growing up, I was regaled with stories by my late father about how he and his friends would climb all over an old steam engine in the Launceston city park when they were kids. As I grew older, a newer train featured prominently in the playground and became the backdrop for numerous joyful moments where my siblings and I played conductor. This tradition was more than just fun; it was a cherished family legacy that I, in turn, passed down to my own children. Watching my kids run around and play while sharing the very stories my father once told me was a unique experience that tied together three generations of our family along with the history of Launceston.

The Launceston City Parks Train Park is not merely a spot for play; it’s a piece of living history, a chronicler of stories and laughter spanning decades. This heritage represents countless shared memories and connections across our community—connections that are at risk of being dismantled as the representation of a train is erased

Preserving the historic fabric of Launceston is crucial, not just for nostalgia, but for the cultural and educational benefits it provides to residents and tourists alike. The train park serves as an emblematic reminder of our past, helping coming generations to understand and appreciate the simpler pleasures that have painted our city's history.

We, the people of Tasmania, must rally to safeguard this vital part of our shared heritage. By supporting this petition, you are not only helping to protect a precious memory but also ensuring that future families can create traditions of their own in this treasured space.

Let us urge the local authorities to prioritise keeping a train in the city park playground in some form for kids to play and use their imagination. Its continued presence is essential for maintaining the unique character of our city park.

Sign this petition today to demand action and assure that the stories and traditions tied to the city parks train are not lost to time.
