Tamworth Borough Council CEO Response and Petition Being Processed by Democratic Services

Last week I received a letter from the Chief Executive (Stephen Gabriel) of Tamworth Borough Council. He confirmed that the Council is aware of the petition and the strong public support for keeping a Post Office in the town centre. The Council was also saddened by the closure of the Church Street Co‑op branch.

Although the Council cannot directly influence Post Office business decisions, officers contacted the Post Office straight away to understand what would be needed for a new premises.

They have discussed whether any Council-owned buildings might be suitable. These conversations are confidential at this stage, but the Council says it is committed to helping retain a Post Office presence in the town if possible.

They also expect the Post Office to be exploring other premises in the town centre, and their Economic Development Team can help identify options. Further information will be shared when available.

This morning Democratic Services confirmed that the petition has been formally received. They requested the online signatures and comments from Change.org, which I have now provided. They will confirm the next steps once they have processed everything.

I will share another update as soon as I receive information about the next steps in the petition process. Thank you to everyone who signed, including those who signed in person. Your support online or in person is part of what has been submitted to the Council.  If you know anyone who would want to stay informed but doesn’t use social media, please feel free to share this update with them.
