The Co‑op is closing, which means the Town Centre Post Office inside it will lose its premises. The final day of service at the current Town Centre Post Office is Friday 31 July at 5.00pm. The Co‑op has been part of Tamworth’s town centre for many years, and its closure marks a significant change for the area. The Post Office premises that many residents rely on will disappear at the same time.

The Post Office has now closed. The petition remains active to show support for a replacement Post Office service in Tamworth Town Centre. 

The notice in the store directs people to Fazeley, Bolehall and Ventura, but none of these locations are easy for many residents. Ventura isn’t pedestrian friendly, and all three can be difficult for anyone with mobility or health issues. Increased footfall at these branches will also mean longer waits.

No public information has been shared so far about what will replace the town‑centre Post Office, and residents are left without clarity.

This is happening while the council is investing heavily in developing the town centre. Losing a central Post Office now would work against those efforts. A Post Office brings people into town, supports local businesses, and keeps essential services within easy reach of residents, workers and visitors.

The Town Centre Post Office provides services people rely on every day: sending parcels, secure insured mail, banking and cash access, bill payments, passport and driving licence applications, stamps, and practical help from experienced staff. These services matter to thousands of people in Tamworth. A town centre Post Office serves all generations, younger people, families, older residents, small businesses, and anyone who relies on secure mail, banking access, or face‑to‑face services.

The closure also affects the experienced staff who have supported residents for years, and it is unclear what will happen to their roles once the branch shuts.

Tamworth has had a Post Office in the town centre for generations, including its long‑standing presence on Lower Gungate from 1958 (now the site of Penny Black), before moving to the Co‑op in the Market Square and later into the Co‑op on Church Street. People have come to rely on having these services in a central, accessible place.

Experience from other towns shows that when central Post Offices close, communities lose a point of connection, local commerce weakens, and the town centre becomes less vibrant. Tamworth should not be asked to absorb those losses.
