Keep 5.0 Weighting for PLTW Engineering Courses at Riverside High School
The Issue
The 5.0 weighted engineering classes in North Carolina have been a staple for years. The rigorous program has led to many students receiving college credit for engineering programs and increasing their chances of getting into rigorous colleges such as UNC and Virginia Tech.
The classes offered have often been stated as some of the most challenging courses, with the Sophomore class Principles of Engineering being stated as one of the three most difficult classes, on par with Calc BC and the AP sciences such as Physics and Chemistry. Students are put into an incredibly fast-paced program with many assignments and tests along the way that require hours of work and study each.
The elimination of the 5.0 weighting for these programs could have disastrous effects on the program, with students' GPAs, and as such their admissions to such difficult programs lowering. This would also make the program less attractive to applicants, which could be harmful as many schools' admissions rely on a lottery system and students are not fed directly into the program without any effort on their own. There is also the concern that the level of work put into the program does not equal the level of reward received. If a student spends far more time in their Engineering classes, working after school with hours and hours of homework, than in any other class, or like the authors of this petition, more time outside of school working on engineering classes than all their other classes combined, including other AP weighted classes, it could create an unequal and unfair dynamic for the students participating.
We encourage you to sign this petition for the good of the students in the program and for the success of the Engineering program and the students working hard in this program.
