Take Action Against Invisible Bullying
The Issue
Many times Kearsarge has been told of bullying incidents. But most of these incidents get ignored for the sole reason that nobody was there to witness it except the person being bullied. I call this "Invisible Bullying."
Where it is understandable that some people claim things to get attention, not everyone does.
My friend was being bullied all year by a group of 7 star athletes/honor roll students. I told her that she needed to tell someone what was happening. So, her and I went to a teacher, who did all she could in the classroom to keep them separated. But she was still plagued with harsh glares, rude comments, and sinister giggles in the hallways. I made her go to the school counselor and talk about it. They brought in the Invisible Bullies in question, but did nothing further. All because my friend was the only one to witness the bullying. Kearsarge's assistant principal, Mr. Robert Bennet, said "They are very trustworthy students on the honor roll and are some of our star athletes. They would never lie about anything like this." After a while, being shy to start with, my friend began to really withdraw.
My friend wrote out her feelings on her blog and used The Sims to create the Invisible Bullies and have them live silly lives in her video game (i.e. marrying each other, sleeping in weird places, acting sleezily, having silly facial distortions, and other silly things that were of no harm). Although it was secure from most eyes, someone shared the blog and screenshots of The Sims with the Invisible Bullies who then showed their parents, the police, and the administration. The blog was a bit inappropriate as far as content but it was written in fear of the girls and as a way to express what my friend was feeling from being bullied. The Invisible Bullies then pretended to be afraid of my friend, telling the administration that they couldn't go to school for fear of her acting out. not to mention the school is well aware of the many times my friend skipped school for fear of getting bullied and harassed.
This lead to my friend being suspended from school. My friend's parents, my parents, and my friends and I fought this. My friend was the only one to receive consequences for the actions of all. She was only expressing her feelings on how she was being tormented every day, and nobody would take any measures to help her.
The Invisible Bullies continued to make problems for my friend outside of school by using their friends Facebook/Twitter profiles and trying to friend her. They discussed the incident in school with others, thinking it was funny. My friend has become very depressed.
What started as 10 day suspension was extend by another 10 days. But now, it is an expulsion. My friend’s suspension was extended due to the fear that the Invisible Bullies would begin bullying more and she would become even more upset and might retaliate and her anxiety would increase. The school told her she was not ready to go back to school because she was not stable. They made her go to a counselor, who should have given her an all clear, but instead the counselor decided she was going on vacation until mid July and did not bother finished the tests to deem my friend able to return to school. While this was being decided, Mr. Bennet turned to her and told her that everyone at school is terrified of her, thinking she is a menace and will hurt them all. She took this to heart, and came to me, asking if it was true.
Because of all this mishap, my friend was kicked out of prom, even though she was told by Mr. Bennet that she was able to attend. A group of friends and I had bought her an entire prom outfit, including her prom ticket for her birthday in April, about a week before the incident and her suspension. Her once in a life time prom was taken away from her because she was being bullied and nobody did anything to stop it. There was no action taken to help her because the bullies outsmarted the system and attacked while nobody was paying attention.
Someone once told me as a sarcastic joke, "If you're going to bully someone, do it to their face so that there is no proof." I find it sad that this statement is strikingly true and something should be done to change that.
My friend is not the only one who has suffered from an incident like this. I could really use the help in bringing this issue to light, how some schools ignore the bullying done by Invisible Bullies.
