Hazard Pay for Harbor Freight Tools Employees During COVID-19
The Issue
Harbor Freight Tools is not controlling the amount of people that are entering a store at a time. HFT is not taking these precautions while other essential businesses are. They allow employees to wear gloves only and masks are not permitted/provided. Employees are at risk every time they go to work because they are exposed to several hundred customers per day. Employees are not receiving hazard pay and employers are not taking safer precautions for the safety of their employees. Employees were sent an email stating that if an associate is confirmed to have COVID-19 " associate will be compensated for missed time to the period directed by their medical provider (up to 14 calendar days). If the associate is still not medically able to return to work, they will be able to apply available TO, sick time, and or take unpaid time off without being penalized for attendance violations". What if an employee dies for being exposed to COVID-19 for being at work without the proper PPE? How will the families of the deceased be compensated? If an employee is exposed to COVID-19 at work and brings it home to expose to the family, then what? That is why employees should be entitled to hazard pay.
