Sustainability Master Plan for Sammamish, WA
The Issue
We, the youth, and the people of Sammamish, have the expectation that the City Council WILL prioritize the development of a Sustainability Master Plan for our city in 2021. We can and will help with this priority, and we urge the Council to take imminent action towards this.
It is crucial that we ensure an economically, environmentally, and socially sustainable future for the City of Sammamish. There are practical steps we can take right now to catch up with the sustainability work of our neighbors right here on the Eastside, including Issaquah, Redmond, Kirkland and Bellevue. We, the youth, have worked with each and every one of these cities and continue to push for measurable sustainable progress, and we clearly see our own city is falling behind.
We recognize and thank the City for signing on to the King County Cities Climate Collaboration (K4C), but it is time for direct actions towards measurable goals. Developing a Sustainability Master Plan for our city will help us progress with a clear, equitable framework. And we, the youth, who depend on today’s sustainable actions for a future we can look forward to, will do everything we can to help to push forward with this priority. But change will come with the city.
King County has a new Climate Action Toolkit. Are we taking advantage of this as a city? We are not.
People for Climate Action has a thorough Climate Action Priorities for Cities Workbook, loaded with specific actions our city can take to realize our K4C commitments. Are we taking advantage of this resource as a city? We are not.
These and many more of the resources the City of Sammamish will need are already available, and it is time for the city to take the next step. We urge the City of Sammamish to prioritize the development of a Sustainability Master Plan, to fulfill our duty as a city of the future, to meet and exceed the goals of our K4C Commitment, and to set a regional, and national, model for sustainability.
A robust, practical framework for sustainability will determine our future in King County, the Pacific Northwest, and beyond. The change we need can only begin with a Sustainability Master Plan, and we, the youth, and the people of Sammamish, cannot wait any longer.
We urge the Council to take the next step forward. For the youth, for the city, for us all.
