Reconsider your stance on the KKG hand sign

The Issue

Kappa Kappa Gamma National Fraternity recently released a statement about the unofficial hand sign that allows members to "Throw What You Know" in representation of the Fraternity. This statement declares that the Fraternity will no longer post pictures or support the use of this sign.

Fraternity statement here: https://www.kappakappagamma.org/kappa/KKGBlogContent.aspx?id=3988

We urge the Fraternity to reconsider for the following reasons:

- The primary and ostensibly only source consulted on this was a non-Kappa, with neither connection to the fraternity nor our ideals. A non-Kappa is not an authority on all things Kappa and should not be our only source.

- None of the membership, active or alumni, was consulted about the change. This is a change that affects the organization on a multi-national level, but no one in the organization was asked her opinion.

- This hand sign is a simple, large, and easy signifier. It can be used to represent the sorority when not wearing Kappa apparel. It is often used in photos showcasing good works (volunteering) or great achievement (graduation). There should be no reason to disallow proud sorority women from representing their organization in a positive way.

- By disallowing this sign because of a vague similarity, when done incorrectly, to a little-known negative organization, we are allowing that organization power over our organization and our members. If we have to eliminate an otherwise positive sign, symbol, or tradition because it may possibly be misconstrued as something it clearly is not, we are giving more importance to an organization that should be ignored and scorned.

- Infighting within our organization only make us weaker. Clearly many members, both active and alumni, are passionate about representing Kappa in a positive way. By telling members that we represent the organization "wrong" because we use the hand gesture, you only drive a wedge between the national organization and your membership.

Please, listen to what the women in your fraternity are saying. We love Kappa. We are proud to be Kappas. We want to be able to share that pride with our friends, sisters, and the world. Don't disallow a simple, innocent hand gesture because of one non-member's opinion. Kappa should be strong and not allow some unknown figure to bully her or her members.
