Ashley Owen started this petition to Kansas Department of Transportation and

On March 6, 2019 another THREE lives were lost on HWY 254. Those were PREVENTABLE DEATHS!! One question is heavy on the minds of all who rely on the heavily-traveled highway: How many more people have to die on Highway 254 before some real changes take place? People of all ages have died and continue to die. Everyday, HUNDREDS of children from surrounding areas are transported by bus on Highway 254. It's awful to think that something terrible would happen, but it is apart of our daily worries as parents. Many of us travel on this deadly highway on a daily basis. Commuting ourselves, our families and we commute with FEAR. We fear for our safety and for the safety of the people we love.

To cross HWY 254, you must cross two lanes of oncoming traffic going 70 plus mph, only to stop in the middle (MANY DO NOT) and wait for two more lanes of traffic to clear before turning or crossing. But be sure you don't turn the WRONG WAY!! Because this also happens frequently. Although this design may have seemed reasonable at the time, I think we are all seeing that this no safe way for anyone. SOMETHING NEEDS TO CHANGE!

Wichita, Bel Aire, Andover, Augusta, Benton, Towanda, El Dorado and surrounding neighbors. It is time for community and school families to reach out to KDOT and demand action. Please join me in calling for action by signing this petition. We will demand that HWY 254 be made safe. It is time to take action to protect people of all ages who use Highway 254 on a daily basis.

THANK YOU FRIENDS FOR BEING THE CHANGE!

Your Friend,

Ashley Owen

K-254 links Wichita to El Dorado. The road begins at the intersection of I-135/US-81/K-15 and I-235 north of Wichita. It bypasses Kechi, Benton and Towanda, ending in downtown El Dorado at an intersection with US-54 and US-77.  It is then four-lane divided with at grade intersections to El Dorado with the exception of a diamond interchange at K-196. There is a stoplight interchange with I-35/Kansas Turnpike on the west side of El Dorado.
