The Issue
Rescue group says dog left out in cold lost most of her litter, 1 survived, and momma dog had her leg amputated after shot by cop
KANSAS CITY, MO (KCTV) - Chain of Hope was called to the 6200 block of East 9th Street in the beginning of January to investigate a dog's living conditions. Chain of Hope found an 8-year-old pregnant pit bull living under a tarp.
Over the next three weeks, all but one puppy died, police shot the mother and she had to have her leg amputated.
The images of a dog named Milkshake are gruesome and Chain of Hope Director Kate Quigley says it shouldn't have happened.
“I do know she wouldn't never be in that situation if animal control did their job,” Quigley said.
Quigley says she alerted Kansas City Animal Control about Milkshake on Jan. 2, but officers didn't make it out to the property until Jan. 8. A city public information officer says animal control found no evidence of improper shelter or abuse. Officers cited the dog's owner for not licensing her and left.
“You don't leave a full-term pregnant pit bull chained to a fence when it's four degrees,” Quigley said.
According to KCTV5's StormTrack5 Weather Center, the overnight temperature on animal control's first visit was minus 3 degrees.
Quigley called again because she wasn't just concerned about Milkshake, but now also her brand new litter of puppies.
“We called animal control back out there saying she had her litter and we think they froze to death,” Quigley said. “They went back out there and said, 'no violations.'"
A Kansas City public information officer says when animal control officers visited the home on Jan. 13 they saw no puppies and recorded the weather as 'fair' that day.
KCTV5 Weather recorded that night's temperature at one degree.
Chain of Hope says one puppy did survive and is currently at KC Pet Project. See the puppy on KC Pet Project's Facebook page.
Five days later Kansas City police were at the property on an unrelated call. For unknown reasons, an officer shot Milkshake in the shoulder and she was taken by animal control.
Quigley says Milkshake's leg has been amputated because, with the gun shot, it could no longer function; however, this all could have been avoided.
“Had they (animal control) done their job and removed her, she would not have lost her litter of puppies except one and she wouldn't be at the vet getting her leg amputated,” Quigley said.
Kansas City police haven't said why they officer shot the dog. KCVT5 went to the home where the dog was being held, but nobody answered.
Chain of Hope says the owners could potentially get their dog back if they pay for Milkshake's medical care.
