Kansas citizens demand statewide data center moratorium.

The Issue

In the last year, the influx of data centers in Kansas has presented a significant threat to the ecological balance and the well-being of local communities. Our cherished way of life and the homeland we call our own are being compromised by these sprawling developments. Grassroots researchers and concerned citizens, like myself, are deeply troubled by the environmental and resource strain these centers impose.

The magnitude of this decision extends far beyond the concept of “home rule authority.” This is not merely a local issue because every decision made by a municipality can have repercussions that traverse borders, impacting those who may not even reside in the said jurisdiction. As municipalities feel compelled to approve these projects, often under the pressure that if they don't, neighboring cities will, our communities are left vulnerable and without real control over the outcomes.

Where does this leave the people?

The urgency for a statewide moratorium on data centers is evident as the number of applications continues to rise. The looming strain on our water resources and energy with the overall environmental impact are undeniable. The Kansas Department of Health and Environment (KDHE) must not permit wastewater to be dumped in detention ponds that sit on our lands, ultimately flowing into downstream drinking water sources An into our watersheds.

The potential velocity and volume of drainage from these detention ponds threaten to deposit silt into our lakes, jeopardizing the health of our aquatic ecosystems. Moreover, the questionable chemicals present in the water pose a risk of damaging our environment irreparably. These concerns are vital not only for the preservation of our natural surroundings but for the future health and safety of all Kansans An as well as the next generation. Your children. Your grandchildren.

Our demand is clear:  we urge our Kansas government and Governor to promptly enact a moratorium on new data center developments across the state Kansas. By doing so, we can comprehensively assess the broader impact on our environment and resources whilst ensuring that adequate, sustainable solutions are enacted to protect our communities’ interests.

SB98 was a fly by night bill that our Governor Kelly signed off on. It left Zero protection for Kansas citizens.

The People of Kansas are using their rights to request this moratorium.
