Give Veterans Jobs Protecting Our Schools
The Issue
There is nothing anyone one of us wouldn’t do for a child. Veterans understand sacrifice while an 8 week $75,000 a year armed/unarmed security guard may not.
Schools are one of the most vulnerable places we expect them to be safe, we send our most loved ones to them. It is a place full of children, teens, and adults.
A daily activity for almost all children and teens. There is no armed/unarmed security if so it maybe limited security abilities. It is a place at which you would assume be a safe environment for teachers, parents, kids, teens, and adults seeking a higher education.
Before media brought more attention to school shootings was it ever really in your mind before hand?
A lot of safety and security and how a person feels towards it is all a matter of how they see it, it also acts as a deterrent for most cases.
The unemployment rate for male and female veterans as of 2014 are both respectably 5.2% and 6.0%. Among the 537,000 unemployed 59% were age 45 and over while 37% were age 25 to 44 and 4% were 18 to 24. Nearly 1 in 3 employed veterans worked in the public sector. In 2014 21.2 million men and women or 9% of the civilian population over 18 were veterans.
Our veterans myself included all took an oath to defend this country and the people who reside in it. I believe I can speak for all of us when it comes to saying there is nothing I would not do for anyone of you. I served my country and I served the people living in it, as such I will continue to do so.
With that mentality it is only amplified by those who cannot properly defend themselves i.e children.
There is nothing anyone one of us wouldn’t do for a child.
With the unemployment rate for veterans seemingly high, why can’t we offer them the job they are the most qualified for with their training? Protecting schools and those who attend them. Now I don’t think the proper response is to arm all the projectionists in the movie theaters or all the vendors in the mall or every teacher in a school.
NRA has announced that it would devise a plan to put armed guards in every school. Why not put those most qualified in that position.
An average armed security officer requires upwards of 6-18 weeks of training to become certified.
A veteran was certified over the course of his tour of duty with real world experiences (Standard tour of duty is a minimum of 3 years)
Security officers only have the knowledge of their training
Veterans are taught to adapt to any situation while they can apply their real world experiences.
Estimated Cost of placing armed uniform officers in each school.
Salary and benefits included @ $75k for all schools (132,183) is 9.9 billion
Public Schools (98,817) only 7.4 Billion
Private Schools (33,366) only 2.5 Billion
The median annual salary for a police officer is roughly $50,000 without benefits.
The annual salary of a military police sergeant is $29,380 with benefits.
Lastly, As you can see we as veterans do not do it for the money else there would be unions in the military that fought for our wages.
Myself over the course of two deployments would have made an hourly wage of $6.57. Trust me when I say 18 hour days are not worth that if I was in it for the money.
If we provided our checks and balances for pre-employment screenings for school security our veterans would possibly jump at the chance to do it I know I would even for free. Veterans have the knowledge and experience to make them best suited to put there life on the line for those schools.
