Kaleo: Don´t play in Apartheid Israel
The Issue
We artists, fans of the group, and people in Iceland and around the world, urge Kaleo to cancel their scheduled concert in apartheid Israel.
Palestinians face an emergency. Apartheid Israel’s new government is the most far-right, racist, homophobic, sexist and fundamentalist in its history.
One Israeli minister proudly describes himself as a “fascist homophobe.” Israeli occupation forces and fanatic settler militias have killed more than 150 Palestinians this year alone, most recently a two year old boy.
Israeli cultural institutions are directly involved in maintaining the whitewashing of the Israeli government's oppression of the Palestinian people.
Through arts and culture, the Israeli government tries to beautify its international image, while the human rights of the Palestinian people are being violated behind the scenes.
Tens of thousands of artists worldwide, including thousands of musicians, have endorsed the call from Palestinian society to refuse invitations from complicit Israeli venues and festivals.
More than 1,500 artists have joined Musicians for Palestine, affirming that “silence is not an option” and pledging to refuse to perform at complicit Israeli institutions.
The venue Kaleo is booked to play, Ra'anana Park Amphitheatre, was built on top of the ruins of four Palestinian communities ethnically cleansed within living memory, including Tabsur.
We doubt Kaleo would have played in South Africa during apartheid there. We urge them to cancel their apartheid Israel show and to do no harm to the nonviolent Palestinian struggle for freedom, justice and equality.
