Re: VOTE OF NO CONFIDENCE FOR K’ATL’ODEECHE FIRST NATION CHIEF APRIL MARTEL
Dear Chief and Council,
We, the undersigned members of the K’atl’odeeche First Nation (KFN), have composed this letter to express our dissatisfaction with the current Chief (April Martel).
This letter is an expression of our Vote of No Confidence in Chief April Martel and her ability to function as the Chief of the K’atl’odeeche First Nation. We understand the severity of this decision and did not arrive at it hastily.
Over the past several years, the community members have always functioned well together, as a cohesive group. We have always been a group that felt proud of our success continuing our traditional values, passed on from our elders.
Throughout the past year we have had concerns regarding April Martel’s lack of competence, professionalism, and leadership specifically regarding trust, integrity, collaboration, decision making, vision, her lack of respect for the community and its members.
Without her acknowledgement of mistakes or the willingness to accept the advice and direction from a trained competent Chief Executive Officer, there is no hope for learning or improvement and thus no chance of moving forward.
We feel she has shown a lack of attention and comprehension necessary for appropriate prioritizing of, the requirements and interests of the K’atl’odeeche First Nation, as well as a failure to recognize and respect the expertise of the K’atl’odeeche First Nation Administration.
We feel she is inconsistent in application of policy and protocol and has an ongoing and uncorrected lack of respect toward community members. A First Nation community cannot be run successfully with a one way avenue of communication. Even when input is sought, there is a failure to follow through with a total disregard for the ideas of many; when communication occurs, it is too often delayed and incomplete. Her decisions seem to be primarily made on impulse rather than for the benefit of the community. There is an overall feeling that K’atl’odeecheFirst Nation services are losing ground all the time. We need a new knowledgeable Chief.
The morale is low amongst the administration staff and we attribute that primarily to Chief April Martel and Sub Chief Doug Lamalice controlling the council’s decisions and therefore we are insisting in a change of these two positions in the leadership.
Although this is not an on the job training position the K’atl’odeeche First Nation members have given her many chances to change and grow in her leadership role, and to date we see no improvement or community development.
Therefore we the undersigned hereby are requesting the removal of the current Chief (April Martel) effective immediately.
