Juvenile Justice

Juvenile Justice
The Issue
I am writing this petition as a concerned individual who has witnessed the unfair treatment of friends within the juvenile justice system. They are currently serving sentences until their mid-twenties for non-violent offenses such as marijuana possession and gun charges. This is a clear indication of an unjust system that disproportionately punishes young offenders, often from disadvantaged backgrounds, with excessively harsh sentences.
The U.S. Department of Justice reports that juveniles are often sentenced to lengthy terms for non-violent offenses, which does not align with international standards or best practices for youth rehabilitation (U.S. Department of Justice). Furthermore, research shows that long-term incarceration does not effectively deter future criminal behavior and can actually exacerbate recidivism rates among youth offenders (National Institute of Justice).
The current state of our juvenile justice system is failing our young people by prioritizing punishment over rehabilitation. It's time we demand changes to these policies to ensure fair treatment and equal opportunities for all children, regardless of their past mistakes.
Please sign this petition to call on lawmakers to reform these unjust practices in the juvenile justice system and provide fairer sentencing guidelines for youth offenders.
