There should be a higher level of education within schools on feminism and equality.
By this, I mean that for three hours a year, secondary school children should be taught a lesson on more recent feminism that isn't studied, and how this can lead to important gender equality changes such as the removal of tampon tax and getting a female other than the queen on bank notes. By doing this, we will be teaching children that they should not be judging a person on anything other than their personality and skills, rather than things they cannot change, like gender.
I think it's important to note why I am starting this petition. Recently, I've been noticing boys in my year at school sharing incredibly sexist posts on social media. Whenever me or my friends say, very politely, that we disagree, we are bombarded with people saying that 'they are not sexist' or 'they don't mean it' or 'it doesn't matter'. I was prompted to write this after being told by a boy my age that "women moan about gender inequality". Maybe if we could educate children, it wouldn't be described as 'moaning' to try and gain equality.
If you would like to see the disgusting level of sexism that I am referring to, then I suggest you visit one of the many pages on Facebook with scary amounts of likes on very offensive posts... For instance: https://www.facebook.com/RevealingFeminism/
At the moment, society seems to believe that after women got the vote, we are all now equal. Or at least, that's what a lot of boys, and even some girls, tell me daily. Yes, in GSCE History we study the Suffragettes and the Suffragists and their fight for the vote. But at KS3 and KS4, we don't actually explain to pupils anything about modern feminism - about amazing women fighting for us to not be under attack for our gender daily, amazing women like Caroline Criado-Perez and Malala Yousafzai.
I am a 15 year old girl. I do not want to have to put up with the current levels of ignorance towards inequality.
Justine Greening, I am writing to you. Please help me to introduce three hours of compulsory education on the fight for equality annually in schools. The national curriculum states that pupils must study religious education and sex and relationships education. By adding gender equality to this list, for a very short amount of time annually, then we can take another little step towards a more educated society and a less sexist one. We will be attacking the issue of gender inequality at the deeper roots of the problem, which, in turn, will help attack the many leaves sprouting off of it.
Please help me raise awareness of an issue of sexism I see everyday. The tampon tax has finally been removed - can you help me fix this and take another step towards equality? Thank you.
