PETITION TO THE PRIME MINISTER, GOVERNMENT OF CANADA AND MEMBERS OF CANADIAN PARLIAMENT

August 09, 2020

Dear Mr Trudeau, dear Ms Freeland, dear Members of Parliament:
We are writing this letter to express the strong condemnation of a wave of violence towards civil activists in Belarus after Presidential elections on August 9 2020. The autocratic government of Belarus should be held entirely responsible for these deplorable actions and the use of force against its people protesting the allegedly rigged results of the elections and violation of their human rights.
It is with deep concern in our hearts that we here in Canada have been following Lukashenka dictatorial regime’s warfare against those who defend their right for a free and democratic election process in Belarus.
Before the presidential election, scheduled on August 9th, the autocracy resorted to political blackmail and illegal detentions - a well-known Belarusian blogger Siarhej Cichanouski and Lukashenka’s leading competitor in the elections, Viktar Babaryka, are among those in custody.
The night after the elections, scores of peaceful protesters have been brutally beaten by the riot police and arrested across Belarus. Lukashenka, dubbed “Europe’s last dictator”, has proven yet once again that nothing will stop him to remain in power.

Belarusian Canadians have constantly supported the democratic aspirations of their fellow Belarusians. Sunday’s election brings Belarus to a juncture in its history that may offer a new page in the country’s long journey to gain its true independence. We support, motivate and inspire those who desire a better future for Belarus and work for this to come true.  The Belarusian community also calls on the Canadian government to impose Magnitsky sanctions on Lukashenka regime officials who have engaged in the abuse of human rights and corruption.
