Say No to A2A: The Backdoor Oil Pipeline on Rails

The Issue

Plans are underway for a rail corridor that would transport Albertan oil to the Pacific coast via Alaska, Yukon, and the Northwest Territories. This project is called A2A (Alaska to Alberta).

A2A is a direct attempt to avoid the heavy resistance to building a direct pipeline to the coast through British Columbia. It’s an attempt to sneak oil through the north.

A2A is completely contrary to calls in the Yukon and elsewhere in Canada for action on climate change. Ottawa is talking about climate accountability right now. This project is not accountable to our climate.

We do not want to contribute to runaway global warming and resulting climate change, we do not want to put ourselves in harms way so big oil companies can make a profit while they destroy our planet’s ecosystems and ruin the lives of millions of people worldwide. We know that it is Indigenous, northern, rural and remote communities who will face many of the most severe local climate change impacts in Canada, because these impacts are already happening. We want to be green economy leaders.

That’s why we need to say no to this project now.

More about this project:

The project is in early phases, but has secured a Presidential permit from the U.S. and there are plans to start early construction in December 2020. While there have been doubts as to whether the project is financially feasible, it has some serious backing from the current Alberta government with premier Jason Kenney saying “We are very excited about the possibility of this project, to add yet another major export avenue for Alberta commodities.”

Alaska to Alberta Railway Development Corp.’s own chair has said ““We are going to cut down trees, clear the land, flatten the land, deal with permitting, deal with First Nations communities and we are going to start piecemeal where we can... “Once the land is ready to go, we are going to start hard construction and we are going to be operational by 2025.””

Many of the lobbyists for A2A have deep connections to the current conservative government in Alberta, including Monte and Matt Solberg and Sonia Kont.

A2A is taking this project seriously. The Alberta government is taking this project seriously. It’s not worth taking the risk that they try to make this pipeline on rails a reality.

Donald Trump said it was his “honor to inform you that I will be issuing a Presidential Permit for the A2A Cross-Border Rail between Alaska & Canada.”

The Trump presidency is coming to an end and this project needs to end with it. It’s time to start building a greener world – one safe for future generations. Sign this petition to say no to A2A.

The following letter will accompany the petition:

Dear Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, Leaders of the Federal Opposition Parties, Premier Sandy Silver of the Yukon, Premier Caroline Cochrane of the Northwest Territories, and President Elect Joe Biden.

We the undersigned call for you to take a stance against the A2A (Alaska to Alberta) Oil Railway corridor. The project is a pipeline on rails – another path to further polluting our planet and increasing our dependence on fossil fuels at a time when we should be moving away from them.

We ask that our leaders in Canada say no to this project; Ottawa is talking about climate accountability right now and this project is not accountable to our climate. In the United States we ask that President Elect Joe Biden rescind the presidential permit granted to this project by Donald Trump.

The undersigned.
