Fight Poverty & Food Insecurity In Nunavut
The Issue
Two-thirds of those under 18 live in households that are food insecure in 2014. Since then, the government has done nothing to help this issue. Despite programs such as Nutrition North Canada—with a whopping budget of almost 100 million—food in the north is still expensive, sometimes up to 11 times higher than costs in the south. Shipping goods daily to the north, both perishable and non-perishable, cost a lot more than shipping goods across the south; it's almost 400 times more expensive per pound compared to the south.
The Indigenous people of Nunavut are required to pay ridiculously high prices when food is not the only thing that is expensive. If the government funded programs such as Nutrition North Canada more, and NGOs, the people of Nunavut can focus on things such as housing. Compared to the rest of Canada, Nunavut has some of the highest rental prices in the country. At almost $3 000 a month for a 3-bedroom apartment and the low income rates in Nunavut, many Inuit & their families are homeless and struggle to keep their stomachs full.
Canada is a country with plentiful resources, yet parts of the country still struggle. We're a country painted to seem like a perfect place to live, a place where you could build a future and live happily, yet it's not the reality for many. With low income rates and high costs for everything, it's no surprise that people are struggling. But it is surprising that people were allowed to struggle in the first place. The government has proposed a larger budget for Nutrition North Canada, but it is yet to be implemented. Since the introduction of NNC, food insecurity has never been so prominent in the north. The money spent from NNC is not enough to cover the costs for the small population of Nunavut.
We want the government to start more programs, and rewrite the policies of NNC as it is clearly not enough. The fact that NNC doesn't help everyone should raise red flags. We want the government to let the Inuit hunt again, and return to their way of survival, as they clearly are not thriving in the north as they used to; programs should be started to help fund for hunting equipment for the Inuit. Their low income cannot help support that. The Indigenous people of Nunavut are still Indigenous people of Canada, yet they are not treated as such. They feel that they are isolated and living in their own country. The government needs to start listening to its people. Please help spread awareness and get the government to listen!
