The Issue
In the booklet sent by Canada Post titled: "Changes to the Labour Canada Code to take effect in Spetember 2019", signed by Ann Therese MacEachern, Chief HR Officer, it was promised by the signatory that: "Canada post will follow the spirit of the law from the outset. We've published this document to inform you of changes coming, so you understand how they will contribute to a better workplace..."
It said that we will get a half hour paid break for every 5 consecutive hours worked and "We will assess the impact of this change on scheduling and revisit the decision to pay for the full half-hour break in January 2020".
Management of Gateway Mississauga has found a way to circumvent the direct written promise by Chief HR Officer and since 2nd week of November onward they have started calling temporary employees for a very "awkward" 4 hours and 45 minutes shift to AVOID the full half-hour break. Before an assessment in January 2020, the gateway management has come up with this malicious idea to circumvent the law by purposely not giving 5 hours work. This is absolutely in contradiction with the promise by Chief HR Officer. In Gateway, there is NOT A SINGLE DEPARTMENT where the schedule is for 4 hours and 45 minutes and therefore, with this petition, we urge the recipients to intervene and stop Gateway Management from carrying this on and start giving 5 hours shift.
