#JusticeForSonya: Oppose the Release of Sean Grayson Pending Trial

The Issue

We, the undersigned, stand in solidarity with the family and community of Sonya Massey and oppose the release of Sean Grayson, a former Sangamon County sheriff’s deputy charged with first-degree murder, aggravated battery with a firearm, and official misconduct. We applaud David Robinson, John Milhiser, and Kwame Raoul for their immediate action to appeal this unjust decision and demand that Grayson remain detained pending trial.

Key Reasons for Opposition

Public Safety and Dangerousness:

  • Sean Grayson’s actions resulted in the fatal shooting of an unarmed Black woman, Sonya Massey, in her own home. This was not a case of self-defense or a necessary use of force. His decision to escalate the situation and use deadly force reflects recklessness and a blatant disregard for human life.

  • Grayson’s impulsive behavior, as documented in court proceedings and law enforcement reports, makes him an ongoing threat to public safety. Releasing him poses an unacceptable risk to the community.

Racial Injustice and Historical Context:

  • The Black community continues to bear the brunt of systemic injustices in law enforcement and the justice system. The killing of Sonya Massey is not an isolated incident but part of a broader pattern of violence and dehumanization of Black individuals, particularly women.
  • The court’s decision failed to consider the historical and ongoing injustices faced by the Black community. This oversight is a gross failure to acknowledge the societal and racial context of this tragedy.

Health Status Does Not Excuse Responsibility:

  • Arguments surrounding Grayson’s health should not overshadow the gravity of the charges he faces. He is accused of murder—an act that cannot be mitigated or excused by his comfort or well-being. Justice must prioritize the victim and her family, not the accused's convenience.

Severe Nature of the Charges:

  • Grayson is charged with murder—a crime that demands the highest level of scrutiny and accountability. This is not a minor offense but the ultimate violation of law and morality. Treating this case with leniency sends a message that taking a life unjustly carries minimal consequences.

Inadequacy of Release Conditions:

  • No combination of conditions can adequately mitigate the risks associated with releasing Grayson. His prior actions, including turning off his body camera and his inappropriate comments following the shooting, demonstrate a disregard for rules and accountability.

Support for the appeal:

We commend David Robinson, John Milhiser, and Kwame Raoul for taking immediate action to appeal this decision, recognizing the grave injustice of releasing Grayson. Their swift response is a beacon of hope for those seeking justice for Sonya Massey and her community.

Global Attention:

This case has drawn attention not only locally but globally. People around the world are watching how the justice system responds to this tragedy. Releasing Grayson pending trial would undermine trust in the legal system and embolden those who act with impunity.

Call to Action
We demand that the judiciary uphold justice by ensuring that Sean Grayson remains detained pending trial. This decision is about more than one case; it is about setting a precedent that values Black lives and holds individuals accountable for their actions.

Community Mobilization:

  • We urge the Black community and all allies to come together in protest of this decision. The family of Sonya Massey deserves our unwavering support as they navigate this painful journey.

  • Protests will likely occur locally, particularly in Chicago. We encourage residents to organize and participate in peaceful demonstrations to amplify this call for justice.

Support and Resources:

  • We are committed to contributing financial resources to support these protests and ensure their impact.
  • Let us make it clear that comfort for the accused must not come at the expense of justice for the victim.
  • Together, we can ensure that the life unjustly taken is honored and that the justice system does not prioritize the defendant’s comfort over accountability. The world is watching—let us show them that we stand for justice.
