Justice4Jennelle Self's Murder. Jennelle suffered through constant assaults, threats, etc.

The Issue

Justice for Jennelle Self

Jennelle Self, a 29-year-old veteran and loving mother, was killed on June 27, 2022, by her neighbor Samantha Muniz after over a year of stalking, harassment, and violence. Jennelle filed multiple restraining orders, called the police repeatedly, and begged Veterans Village of San Diego (VVSD) for security — which they removed just two weeks before her death.

Despite eyewitness accounts, ring camera footage, and premeditated text messages showing Muniz’s threats and hatred toward Jennelle, her charges were reduced from first-degree murder to assault with a deadly weapon. On November 16, 2023, Muniz was convicted of this lesser charge, facing a maximum sentence of only 8 ½ years.

⚖️ Court Information
Sentencing Date: December 13, 2023, at 9 AM
Location: Downtown San Diego Courthouse, 92101
Judge: Peter Deddeh
Prosecutor: Kelsey Hollander (Supervisor: Clayton C. Biddle)

This is not justice. Jennelle’s murder was deliberate. Muniz struck her twice with her vehicle — caught on camera and witnessed. Jennelle’s last moments were spent trying to stop her neighbor, who had threatened her and her baby for over a year.

Jennelle’s two-year-old son will now grow up without his mother.

We are asking for:

Maximum sentencing for Samantha Muniz.
Proper media coverage — if you have contacts with journalists, please share this case. (My interview with ABC 10 News in June 2023 was never aired).
Public awareness to hold the justice system accountable.

Jennelle was a strong, caring woman who loved her son deeply. She deserved protection, but the system failed her. Please share her story so that no other family has to endure this kind of preventable tragedy.

Our Goal: Justice for Jennelle Self
We are fighting to get justice for Jennelle Self, her family, her friends, and all her loved ones. We are demanding that Samantha Muniz receive the maximum prison sentence allowed. At the very least, we want manslaughter charges if murder is not pursued. Shockingly, she wasn’t even charged with reckless driving.

We need your help to spread awareness about what happened to Jennelle and to push for media coverage.

Reporter Natalie Chuck from ABC 10 News interviewed me in June 2023 and told me she would try to publish the story on 11/13. Since then, she has left my messages on read and never followed up. The interview was never aired, and management never explained why. If you have media connections, please help us get Jennelle’s story told.

What Happened in Court
Samantha’s original charge of first-degree murder was dropped to assault with a deadly weapon.
Prosecutor: Kelsey Hollander
Supervisor: Clayton C. Biddle
On 11/16/23, Samantha was found guilty of the felony assault charge.
Despite camera footage and premeditated text messages of her “big f*** you plan,” Samantha has never been charged for Jennelle’s murder. She even texted that Jennelle was “a demented waste of human flesh.” In October 2022, just months before killing Jennelle, Samantha texted that Jennelle was “a bitch.” These show clear intent and zero remorse.

The maximum sentence she now faces is only 8 ½ years at her sentencing on December 13, 2023, at 9 AM at the Downtown San Diego Courthouse (92101).

Judge Peter Deddeh even granted Samantha a five-day extension to “take care of personal matters” because she and her adult daughter “rely on each other.” Jennelle, a mother, was killed and left her 2-year-old son behind, but the judge showed pity to the killer instead. This raises serious concerns about how lenient the sentencing may be.

Samantha’s attorney, Bridget Rubens, even had the audacity to say that Samantha has had “good behavior” and is “not a danger to society.”

The Day Jennelle Was Killed – June 27, 2022
According to Jennelle’s friend Debra Berg, who witnessed the attack:

Jennelle and Berg were leaving their apartment complex near Valencia Park when an argument broke out with Samantha.
Jennelle stood in front of Samantha’s car while pointing her camera at the vehicle.
Samantha inched forward while Jennelle backed away, continuing to film.
Samantha shouted, “Get out of the way!”
Jennelle responded, “You’re not going anywhere!”
Samantha hit Jennelle twice with her car, knocking her unconscious on the street.
Jennelle was rushed to the hospital but tragically pronounced dead.

Debra described Jennelle as a strong woman with integrity who loved her son unconditionally. He was just two years old and sitting in a nearby parked car when his mother was killed.

“I’m angry for that kid,” Debra said. “He is never going to know his mother.”

Timeline of Harassment and Violence by Samantha Muniz Against Jennelle Self
For over a year before Jennelle’s death, Samantha harassed, stalked, threatened, and physically attacked Jennelle. Despite multiple reports, restraining orders, and video evidence, Samantha repeatedly avoided accountability.

Here are some key events (all documented in police reports, restraining orders, and eyewitness statements):

3/25/21 – Threats began. Samantha assaulted Jennelle multiple times and even threatened her 2-year-old son. Jennelle reported feeling unsafe and filed official reports. Police advised her to seek a restraining order.
12/2021 – Samantha stole Jennelle’s steam cleaner. She retaliated by spraying Jennelle and her baby with a hose, slashing Jennelle’s tires, vandalizing her car multiple times with corrosive liquid, and destroying her Ring cameras.
1/1/22 – Samantha threatened to call CPS on Jennelle and blocked her Ring camera by parking illegally. She continued verbal harassment and flipped off Jennelle’s camera.
2/8/22 – Samantha assaulted Jennelle with a deadly weapon. She threw a wooden chair from a second-story balcony, hit Jennelle with her car, and attempted to stab her with a knife during a 911 call. Jennelle suffered injuries and was treated at Alvarado Hospital. Police again advised her to obtain a restraining order.
2/9/22 – Jennelle filed a civil harassment case against Samantha for assault, theft, vandalism, and property damage.
2/22/22 – Samantha violated the restraining order by entering Jennelle’s porch and wiping her feet on her rug.
2/26/22 & 2/28/22 – Samantha continued harassing Jennelle, standing outside her bedroom window at night and washing her car in front of her window.
3/7/22 – Jennelle filed another protection order against Samantha and her daughter, citing ongoing threats and physical assaults.
4/20/22 – Jennelle filed for an extension of her TRO (Temporary Restraining Order).
This harassment continued until Samantha finally killed Jennelle on 6/27/22.

VVSD’s Negligence
Jennelle lived in transitional housing at Veterans Village of San Diego (VVSD). She repeatedly warned VVSD staff that her life was in danger. Security was removed just two weeks before her death. After Jennelle was killed, VVSD reinstated security at the very gate where Samantha ran her over.

VVSD ignored Jennelle’s pleas and failed to protect her and her son. Multiple investigative reports have since revealed unsafe conditions, drug abuse, and leadership failures at VVSD.

Why We’re Speaking Out
Jennelle was a veteran, a mother, a daughter, and a friend. She was only 29 years old when she was killed. Her son will now grow up without her because the system failed to protect her despite overwhelming warnings and evidence.

Samantha Muniz, who had a long history of violence, threats, and criminal behavior, has served only two nights in jail and faces a sentence far too short for the life she stole.

Case File: Timeline of Harassment, Violence, and Negligence in the Murder of Jennelle Self
Victim: Jennelle Self (29, veteran, mother)
Perpetrator: Samantha Muniz (neighbor, repeat aggressor)
Location: Veterans Village of San Diego (VVSD) – Transitional Housing
Outcome: Jennelle killed on June 27, 2022 by intentional vehicular assault

Early Harassment & Threats
03/25/21 – Samantha begins verbal threats and physical assaults against Jennelle. Threatens Jennelle’s 2-year-old son. Police reports filed. Jennelle advised to seek restraining order.

Escalation of Abuse (2021)
12/2021 – Samantha escalates:

Steals Jennelle’s steam cleaner.
Sprays Jennelle and her baby with a hose.
Slashes Jennelle’s tires.
Pours corrosive liquid on Jennelle’s car (multiple times).
Damages her Ring cameras.

Documented Violence (2022)
01/01/22 – Samantha threatens CPS involvement, parks illegally to block Ring camera, continues harassment.
02/08/22 – Major Assault Incident

Throws a wooden chair from 2nd-story balcony at Jennelle.
Strikes Jennelle with her car.
Attempts to stab Jennelle with a knife during a 911 call.
Jennelle suffers injuries, treated at Alvarado Hospital.
Police again advise restraining order.
02/09/22 – Jennelle files civil harassment case against Samantha for assault, theft, vandalism, and property damage.
02/22/22 – Samantha violates TRO, enters Jennelle’s porch, wipes feet on rug.
02/26–02/28/22 – Stalking behavior:

Stands outside Jennelle’s bedroom window at night.
Washes car directly outside her window in a harassing manner.
03/07/22 – Jennelle files another protection order against Samantha and her daughter citing ongoing threats and physical assaults.
04/20/22 – Jennelle requests extension of her TRO (Temporary Restraining Order).

Failure of VVSD
Jennelle repeatedly warned VVSD staff of threats to her safety.
VVSD removed security guards from the gate two weeks before Jennelle’s death.
After her death, VVSD reinstated security at the same gate where Samantha ran Jennelle over.

Murder of Jennelle Self
06/27/22 –

Jennelle and friend Debra Berg encounter Samantha during an argument near the complex entrance.
Jennelle films Samantha’s car with her phone.
Samantha inches forward, yells “Get out of the way!”
Jennelle responds: “You’re not going anywhere.”
Samantha strikes Jennelle twice with her car, killing her in front of witnesses and Ring cameras.
Jennelle’s 2-year-old son was nearby in a parked car.

Aftermath & Legal Injustice
11/16/23 – Jury convicts Samantha of assault with a deadly weapon, not murder.
Evidence of premeditation (texts calling Jennelle “a demented waste of human flesh” and “a bitch”) not enough for DA to pursue homicide charges.
Maximum sentence: 8 ½ years.
Sentencing Date: 12/13/23, 9 AM – San Diego Courthouse, Judge Peter Deddeh.

Summary
Jennelle Self lived in fear for over a year, filing restraining orders, police reports, and medical reports after repeated violent assaults by Samantha Muniz. VVSD failed to protect her despite numerous warnings. On June 27, 2022, Samantha deliberately killed Jennelle with her car.

Despite overwhelming evidence, the justice system downgraded the case to assault, leaving Jennelle’s family and young son without justice.
