Justice for Women: Stronger Punishments, Longer Sentences, More help!

The Issue

United, we can make a change.

I am writing this petition with a heavy heart and a deep sense of urgency. As someone who has witnessed the devastating impact of domestic violence on women, I am appalled by the lack of appropriate punishment for their violent ex partners. As well as support for victims. The legal system fail women daily... how much more blood needs to be spilt for them to take us seriously?

It is time to take a stand and demand justice for survivors.

I have seen firsthand the fear and trauma experienced by women who have had to flee their homes with their children, seeking refuge from their violent thug ex partners. These brave women should not have to live in constant fear or keep running from one place to another just to ensure their safety.

The current justice system fails them, allowing perpetrators of domestic violence to roam free while countless lives are shattered.

Once women have gained the courage and strength to leave and flee, what support do they have? Where is the empathy? They are uprooted from everyone and everything they know, living in fear, with nothing. All their worldy possessions? Gone. Thoes memory boxes we all like to make for our children? Left behind. Pictures, trinkets, even basics like clothing?! Left. And then what happens. You are left alone, scared, no one to talk to, not a lot of support. The lack of funding for the mental health system means these women are on years long waiting lists for treatments and therapies that are much needed after the physical and mental war they have just fled.

Facts and Statistics:
1. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), approximately 30% of women worldwide experience physical or sexual violence by an intimate partner in their lifetime.

2. In many countries, including developed nations like the United States and United Kingdom, domestic violence accounts for a significant proportion of all homicides against women.

3. Research conducted by Amnesty International reveals that inadequate sentencing often leads to repeat offenses by perpetrators, perpetuating cycles of abuse.

4. On average 2 women per week die at the hands of a current or former partner.

5. It is estimated that 3 women a week will commit suicide due to the abuse they endure.

6. Around 1 in 5 children live with a perpetrator of domestic violence.

7. Domestic violence is associated with depression, anxiety, PTSD and substance abuse in the general population.

8.  SafeLives report found that mental health services are not equipped to respond properly to domestic abuse; SafeLives estimated that only 10-30% of mental health cases linked to domestic abuse are actually identified as being related to domestic abuse.

9. Studies show that anywhere between 31 and 84 percent of domestic violence survivors will develop PTSD.

Women are seeing more and more that their abusers 'human rights' are being placed above the value of their lives. How is this being allowed?!

We are calling on the government for change.

We are calling on Yorkshire and Humberside Chief Crown Prosecutor Jan Lamping, Deputy Chief Crown Prosecutor Michael Quinn to look at the current sentences and laws of domestic abuse preparators and victim protection and make a change.

We are Calling on Maria Caulfield MP who was appointed Parliamentary Under Secretary of State at the Department of Health and Social Care, and Parliamentary Under Secretary of State (Minister for Women) to look at the current support offered for victims of DV/A and the funding.

We are calling on Dame Sue Carr sworn in as Lady Chief Justice by the Judicial office
