On August 14 a wolf was relentlessly hunted with drones and shot down because they were near schoolyards. The wolf harmed no one.  The natural resources minister was posing with the dead wolf.  💔

In Canada however, wild canids are accepted in many cities, including the capital city of Ottawa. Coexistence is achieved with the help of organizations like Coyote Watch Canada.

BREAKING: YOUNG WOLF SHOT DEAD IN DENMARK

A young male wolf has been shot and killed by the Danish Nature Agency near Houstrup in West Jutland after authorities designated him a “problem wolf”.

To be absolutely clear: this is NOT the wolf seen confronting the jogger in the recent viral video. That incident happened hundreds of kilometres away in Bunken Klitplantage, North Jutland, where a runner encountered an adult wolf with a cub. Experts concluded that wolf was not a “problem wolf” and appeared to be trying to make the runner move away. (Sydnyt⁠)

The wolf killed this week was linked by authorities to a series of incidents around Nørre Nebel, including approaching people and reportedly coming close to children playing in private gardens. Authorities said he showed unusually little fear of humans and could not easily be frightened away. (DK Sundhed⁠)

Officials had been searching for him since 6 August, using personnel and thermal-imaging drones. On Thursday 13 August, he was located near Houstrup and shot from just 10 metres away. (Via Ritzau⁠)

Whatever your feelings about the decision, it is desperately sad to see a magnificent young wild animal lose his life after apparently losing the natural wariness of humans that might have kept him safe.

As someone who deeply cherishes our local wildlife, these encounters are particularly personal to me. A young wolf, displaying more curiosity than caution, has been approaching people in various areas. According to the leading wolf researchers examining 13 such encounters, this young wolf's behavior is likely due to being fed by humans, causing it to lose its natural wariness. It's crucial to understand that this wolf has not shown any aggression nor posed any real threat to humans.

Instead of resorting to drastic measures such as lethal removal, which has surfaced in discussions, we should focus on fostering coexistence. These wolves are akin to curious puppies. The instances of wolves following people are probably protective parents ensuring the safety of their pack while observing human movements. It's an essential step to comprehend their curious nature and overly curious wolves can often be redirected with simple measures that respect their role in our ecosystem.

One actionable solution is to immediately implement a ban on feeding wolves. Feeding diminishes their natural avoidance of humans and disrupts their natural behavior patterns. Educating the public on safe wildlife interactions can significantly reduce these encounters. Resources dedicated to awareness campaigns will equip locals and visitors alike on how to enjoy these magnificent creatures from a respectful distance without tempting them with food.
