Tyquan General Jr. was only 14 years old when his life changed forever. At Southeast Raleigh Magnet High School, he was jumped by multiple students at once. Video evidence shows him outnumbered, cornered, and terrified. In that moment, Tyquan defended himself.

Now, instead of being seen as a victim of violence, Tyquan is facing first-degree murder charges.

Why this is wrong:
He acted in self-defense. North Carolina law (N.C. Gen. Stat. § 14-51.3) clearly says a person may use deadly force if they reasonably believe it is necessary to prevent imminent death or great bodily harm.

He was a child under attack. No 14-year-old should be expected to simply take a beating from multiple attackers.
The knife doesn’t erase his right to survive. Yes, he should not have had a knife at school. But that is a separate issue. Possession of a knife does not mean he forfeited his basic human right to defend himself when his life was in danger.

Our call:

We demand that the Wake County District Attorney and the State of North Carolina:

Drop the murder charges against Tyquan General Jr.

Recognize this case for what it is — a child defending his life.
Work to make schools safer so kids don’t feel the need to carry weapons in the first place.

Tyquan was a victim who survived an attack. Charging him as a murderer is not justice — it’s a tragedy on top of a tragedy.

Evidence:

The video shows Tyquan backed into a corner, being assaulted by one student while several others surround him. In that moment, he had every reason to believe he faced an imminent threat of serious harm. As he defends himself, more students rush in, knock him to the ground, and begin stomping on him — confirming that his fear for his safety was justified from the very start.

Throughout the chaos, Tyquan is seen stabbing his attackers multiple times, yet even this does not immediately stop the brutal beating he endures. The footage makes clear that Tyquan’s actions were not an act of aggression, but a desperate attempt to survive a savage group assault.
