Das Problem

Timmy, the humpback whale who captured the attention of thousands across Europe, has been confirmed dead after a highly public and controversial rescue operation.

For weeks, people followed his struggle with hope, concern and emotion. Timmy was first seen stranded in German Baltic Sea waters, later transported by barge toward deeper waters, released, tracked, and eventually found dead near the Danish island of Anholt.

This petition is not about attacking individuals. It is about truth, transparency, animal welfare and learning from what happened.

Timmy’s case involved public authorities, private rescue efforts, experts, media attention and significant public interest. Because of that, the public deserves clear answers.

We respectfully call on the responsible German and Danish authorities to provide:

  1. A transparent public timeline
A clear timeline of Timmy’s stranding, rescue attempts, transport, release, tracker signals, loss of contact and discovery in Denmark.
  2. Release of available tracking information
Any non-sensitive tracker data should be made public, including last known positions, signal failures and how Timmy’s identity was confirmed.
  3. A scientific investigation into Timmy’s death
If a full necropsy is still possible, it should be carried out. If not, authorities should publish the strongest scientific assessment possible, including the condition of the body, visible injuries, signs of illness, malnutrition, stress, trauma or entanglement.
  4. An independent review of the rescue operation
Marine mammal experts who were not directly involved in the rescue decisions should review whether the rescue, transport and release followed the best available animal welfare standards.
  5. Clear future protocols for stranded large whales
Germany and Denmark should work together on transparent emergency protocols for future whale strandings, including when intervention is appropriate, when non-intervention or euthanasia may be more humane, how private rescue attempts are assessed, and how the public is informed.
  6. Better public communication
In emotional cases like this, authorities should communicate clearly, factually and regularly to avoid confusion, speculation and misinformation.
Timmy cannot be saved anymore. But his death must not be ignored.

His case raises important questions:
Was he already too weak to survive? Did the rescue operation give him a real chance, or did it prolong suffering? What did the tracker actually show? Why is there currently no full necropsy planned? What can be learned so future stranded whales are treated better?

We ask the responsible authorities to honor Timmy with transparency, science and accountability.

For Timmy.
For future stranded whales.
For better marine animal welfare.
