Justice for the Victim: Keep a Teenage Murderer Behind Bars

The Issue

As residents of Cortez Co., we stand united in seeking justice for the victim and ensuring the safety of our community. This petition aims to gather support and urge the judge to reconsider granting a plea deal of only 5 years in Juvenile Youth Corrections and 7 years in the Youthful Offenders System to a teenage murderer who took her own mother's life.

Personal Story:
This petition is deeply personal to me, as it strikes at the heart of our community's safety and well-being. The tragic incident that unfolded on July 29, 2022 shook us all to our core when Shyanne Boyd committed an unspeakable act by taking her own mother's life. The loss of Shaylie Boyd felt by family, friends, and this community cannot be put into words. This community will not be safe with Shyanne released so quickly. Our youth is at risk and she should be punished to the full extent for the crimes she committed.

The Facts:
1. Crime Statistics: According to data from , the CDC homicide rates have been steadily increasing in recent years across the United States. It is crucial for us as a community to send a strong message that such heinous acts will not be tolerated or taken lightly.

2. Rehabilitation Success Rates: While rehabilitation programs can play an essential role in reforming offenders, it is important to consider their effectiveness on a case-by-case basis. Studies have shown that individuals convicted of violent crimes often pose higher risks of reoffending compared to other offenders.

3. Public Safety Concerns: Releasing someone convicted of murder after serving such a small sentence sends a dangerous message about our commitment to public safety and justice system accountability. We must prioritize protecting innocent lives over potential risks associated with early release.

4. Victim Impact: The impact on victims' families cannot be understated; they endure immeasurable pain and suffering due to these senseless acts of violence. Granting leniency without considering their ongoing trauma undermines their right for closure and justice.

Our Call for Action:
We, concerned residents of Cortez Co., implore the Judge not to accept the plea deal that would release Shyanne Boyd after serving only five years in The Department Of Youth Corrections and 7 years in the Youth Offenders System. We believe that justice must be served, and the severity of this crime demands a proportional punishment.

By signing this petition, we stand together to protect our community from potential harm and ensure that the memory of the victim is honored. Let us send a resounding message that we will not tolerate violence within our town and demand accountability for those who commit such heinous acts.

The next court date is set for Tuesday August 29, 2023. It is urgent that we obtain these signatures as soon as possible. We strive to present this when the judge will make a final decision to accept or deny this plea deal.

Together, let us fight for justice and keep a teenage murderer behind bars where they belong.
