Justice for Stray Dogs Brutally Shot in Houston Park

Justice for Stray Dogs Brutally Shot in Houston Park
The Issue
In Houston, a horrifying act of cruelty shocked the community this week. Witnesses say a man opened fire on a group of six stray dogs in a southwest Houston park, injuring two and terrifying the rest. The suspect, Oscar Junior Johnson, has been charged with two counts of animal cruelty and as a felon in possession of a firearm.
Two of the dogs are now recovering from devastating injuries. One suffered multiple fractures, the other a shattered ulna. Both are being cared for by the Houston SPCA, along with the other four dogs that survived the attack. These animals were defenseless. They posed no threat. Yet they were gunned down in a public space where families, children, and pets all gather.
Animal cruelty is not just a crime against pets — it is a crime against the community. Studies show links between violence toward animals and violence toward people. When someone opens fire on living creatures in a public park, everyone’s safety is at risk. Houston must respond with the strongest possible action to ensure justice for these dogs and protection for the public.
We demand that Harris County District Attorney Kim Ogg, Harris County Precinct 1 Constable Alan Rosen, and the Houston Police Department fully prosecute this case to the maximum extent of the law. We also call on Houston City Council and Mayor John Whitmire to strengthen enforcement against animal cruelty and to expand resources for stray and community animals.
No one should be allowed to harm defenseless animals without consequence. Houston has the opportunity to send a clear message: cruelty will not be tolerated here. These dogs deserve justice. This community deserves safety.
