Justice for Steven
The Issue
The purpose of this petition is to end OKC Animal Welfare’s Free Adoption Events and to press animal cruelty charges to Steven’s adopter. Rehoming or adoption fees are necessary because they can help prevent animal cruelty and demonstrate a willingness to care for an animal. Many animals are adopted at these events by people who cannot care for them or who end up performing animal cruelty acts. No more animals need to suffer from the lack of our leadership and management. Our foster Steven and his story are a great representation on why Free Adoption Events must end.
Meet Steven…
On June 30th, 2022 Steven was picked up as a stray and taken to the OKC Animal Welfare Shelter. Steven spent 1.5 months at the shelter before he got adopted on August 14th, 2022 at one of their Free Adoption Events.
On Steven’s adoption day, he weighed 47 lbs.
On October 28, 2022, Steven was brought back to the shelter by a man in a ski mask. Steven only weighed 26 lbs when he was returned. The man refused to remove the ski mask and refused to give a photo ID. There is evidence to conclude that the same man who adopted Steven is the same man who returned him to the shelter.
Steven was in his adopter’s care for only 2 months and had lost a total of 25 lbs. An OKC Animal Welfare veterinarian diagnosed Steven underweight and his fecal came back positive with coccidia. OKC Animal Welfare treated the coccidia and placed Steven on a very strict meal plan.
On November 3, 2022 Helping Community Paws & Claws pulled Steven from the shelter.
On November 15, 2022 Steven was taken to Crosstown Vet in Guthrie, Oklahoma. Steven weighed in at 37.6 lbs. In just 12 days, Steven had gained 11.6 lbs. There were no indications of any health problems that could result in weight loss. There is evidence that Steven’s intense weight loss resulted from the lack of any food resources while he was in the care of his adopter.
Animal cruelty is a felony in Oklahoma. Animal cruelty is defined as the willful or malicious torturing, destruction, beating, maiming, mutilation, or killing of an animal, regardless of ownership and regardless of whether the animal is wild or domesticated. The statute goes on to add that depriving an animal of necessary food, drink, shelter, or veterinary care to prevent suffering, constitutes as animal cruelty.
