The Issue

PUBLIC PETITION TO THE DIRECTOR OF PUBLIC PROSECUTIONS AND THE CABINET SECRETARY, MINISTRY OF INTERIOR AND NATIONAL ADMINISTRATION
FOR JUSTICE FOR THE LATE SISTER ANSELMINA KARIMI

We, the undersigned family members, beneficiaries, and concerned citizens, bring this petition in the spirit of justice, constitutionalism, and humanity, demanding that the State urgently and transparently investigates the brutal and suspicious killing of Sister Anselmina Karimi, and brings all perpetrators—direct or indirect—to account before the law.

For nearly four decades, Sister Anselmina Karimi—a devoted member of the Nazareth Sisters of the Annunciation—dedicated her life to serving orphans, abandoned children, and those living with disabilities at Meru Children’s Home. Through her compassion and tireless sacrifice, she transformed the lives of hundreds of vulnerable children in Nkabune and beyond. Her life embodied the values enshrined in Articles 10, 26, and 28 of the Constitution of Kenya—the sanctity of life, human dignity, and service to humanity.

Yet, on or about 12th October 2025, this saintly soul met a gruesome and suspicious death under circumstances that remain unresolved. Her body, found with visible injuries and blood oozing from her mouth and ears, bore clear evidence of violence. Disturbingly, her home appeared cleaned, her phone went missing, and her death was followed by a trail of silence, evasion, and concealment.

A colleague and fellow nun was initially arrested in connection with the murder but was released without charge or explanation. Meanwhile, the Catholic Diocese of Meru—instead of standing with the family and community in pursuit of justice—has sought to rush through a burial without the participation or consent of the family, beneficiaries, or the public whose lives Sister Karimi uplifted. This act threatens to destroy vital forensic evidence, obstruct the course of justice, and permanently bury the truth.

The 1st and 2nd Respondents—the Director of Public Prosecutions and the Cabinet Secretary for Interior— are constitutionally mandated under Articles 157 and 244 to uphold the rule of law, protect life, and ensure impartial investigation and prosecution of all criminal acts. Their continued silence and inaction in this matter not only betray the memory of Sister Karimi but also erode public confidence in Kenya’s justice system.

We therefore demand:

1. An immediate and comprehensive investigation into the murder of Sister Anselmina Karimi by an independent multi-agency task force under the supervision of the DCI’s Homicide Unit.

2. The preservation of all forensic evidence, including the deceased’s remains, pending a transparent and independently witnessed postmortem.

3. That no burial shall proceed until the investigation is completed and all evidentiary leads are exhausted.

4. The public release of investigative findings and assurance of protection for witnesses and whistleblowers.

5. That the Director of Public Prosecutions institutes criminal proceedings against all culpable persons—regardless of rank, religious status, or affiliation.

Sister Anselmina gave her life to protect the weak. The least Kenya can do is protect the truth about her death. We stand united in the belief that justice delayed is justice denied, and that the soul of our nation depends on the courage to defend its most selfless servants.

Justice for Sister Anselmina Karimi is Justice for Every Forgotten Child.
