I need everyone following Shawn’s case to understand something.
Every time new records are released, they are not answering questions.
They are creating more contradictions.
And at this point, what we are seeing is deeply concerning.
Over the last few months I have been carefully reviewing the documents related to my son Shawn Lee Fortune’s death at the Pittsburgh Job Corps Center.
Recently, several new internal documents were released, including dorm monitoring records, confiscation logs, and emergency response materials.
When these new documents are compared to the timeline that Job Corps originally sent, the story becomes even more troubling.
Here is what the records actually show.
1. Shawn was last seen alive at 11:56 PM.
According to the timeline provided by Job Corps, Shawn was sitting in the dorm lounge from 9:57 PM until 11:56 PM. Why was Shawn allowed to remain in the dorm lounge for hours late at night?
According to the timeline provided by Job Corps, Shawn was sitting in the dorm lounge from 9:57 PM until 11:56 PM.
That is almost two hours.
But according to Job Corps residential policies, students are expected to be in their dorm rooms by a certain time at night.
So that raises an obvious question:
Why was Shawn still in the lounge that long?
At 11:56 PM, he left the lounge and walked toward his room.
At 11:57 PM, the records say he entered Room 2031.
The timeline then states that Shawn never left his room again for the rest of the night.
---
2. Staff entered the room at 12:09 AM.
About twelve minutes later, a Residential Advisor reportedly entered the room during a dorm check to make sure the students were there.
That means a staff member physically entered Shawn’s room around 12:09 AM.
This detail matters because it means staff were close enough to observe the condition of the students in the room.
---
3. After 12:20 AM, there were no dorm checks for nearly six hours.
The timeline itself says that after 12:20 AM, there were no additional dorm checks until wake-up time at 6:00 AM.
That means students in the dorm were not checked on for nearly six hours overnight.
---
4. Another document says dorm checks happened at 3:00 AM and 5:20 AM.
Here’s where things start to get even more confusing.
A different record — the dorm bed-check roster — shows that staff supposedly performed dorm checks at:
• 7:16 PM
• 11:12 PM
• 12:20 AM
• 3:00 AM
• 5:20 AM
But the timeline says no dorm checks happened after 12:20 AM.
So now we have two official records that contradict each other.
Either those checks happened, or they didn’t.
Both cannot be true.
---
5. Shawn was discovered unresponsive at 6:04 AM.
According to the timeline:
At 6:04 AM, a student reported that Shawn was unresponsive.
Staff entered the room shortly afterward.
But here is something that stands out.
911 was not called until 6:13 AM.
That means nine minutes passed between the moment Shawn was reported unresponsive and the moment emergency services were contacted.
---
6. During the emergency response, staff left the room and continued normal routines.
The timeline states that during the response:
• A staff member left the room to get
paper towels
• Another staff member left to continue
morning wake-up rounds
These actions happened while Shawn was still described as unresponsive in the room.
---
7. Hours later, pills were discovered during a room search.
Later that morning, security searched Shawn’s room.
According to the records, they found:
• Turquoise pills inside a folded dollar bill
• Four packaged prescription pills inside Shawn’s backpack
---
8. Another document lists “unknown pills” taken from Shawn that same day.
A confiscation log also records that *“unknown pills” were secured on February 26 under Shawn’s name.
This appears to match the pills discovered during the room search.
But this raises another serious question.
Earlier medical records said that Shawn’s medications were expired and thrown away.
So if his medications were already disposed of…
why were packaged prescription pills still found in his belongings?
---
9. One record even lists an inhaler — but Shawn never had asthma.
The confiscation log also lists “Meds & Inhaler.”
As Shawn’s parent, I can say clearly:
Shawn did not have asthma.
He was not prescribed an inhaler.
He took psychiatric medication and vitamins, but nothing for asthma, high blood pressure, or cholesterol.
Yet other paperwork written by staff has also tried to suggest those conditions.
That information does not match what I know about my son’s medical history.
---
10. And after all this time… I still do not have Shawn’s death certificate.
Let that sink in.
It has been 1 year.
I have repeatedly requested my son’s death certificate, which is a basic document families normally receive quickly.
I was recently told by email that someone has requested it and will keep me posted.
But I still do not have it.
As a mother trying to understand how her child died, I should not have to fight this hard just to obtain basic documents.
---
What these records show is not clarity.
They show contradictions.
They show missing pieces.
They show records that do not line up with each other.
And every time a new document is released, it raises more questions about what actually happened during Shawn’s final hours.
---
Shawn Lee Fortune was not just a name on paperwork.
He was my son.
He deserved to come home alive.
And until the full truth about what happened inside that dorm is uncovered, I will continue pushing for answers.
Please keep sharing Shawn’s story.
Please keep demanding accountability.
Because no family should ever have to fight this hard just to learn the truth about their child.
Justice for Shawn Lee Fortune.
