Petition updateJustice for Shawn Fortune: Investigate His Death at Pittsburgh Job CorpsWHAT THE DOCUMENTS ARE REVEALING ABOUT SHAWN'S LAST 48 HOURS

Over the last several days I have been carefully reviewing a new set of documents related to my son Shawn Lee Fortune’s time at the Pittsburgh Job Corps Center.

These records raise serious new questions about what actually happened during the short time Shawn was there.

Shawn arrived at the center on February 24, 2025.

Less than 48 hours later, he was dead.

The documents we have now reviewed reveal troubling inconsistencies that were not clear before.

One of the most disturbing issues involves Shawn’s medications.

According to the medical records, the medications Shawn brought with him were labeled “expired” and disposed of in a medical waste bin.

But the same record then states that a tablet of one of those same medications was given to Shawn to take back to the dorm that night.

If the medications were truly expired and destroyed, how was one of them given to him afterward?

The next morning, those same medications appear again in the record as being administered.

These statements cannot all be true at the same time.

The way medication was handled also raises concerns.

The documentation indicates that Shawn was given medication to take later in the dorm, rather than being supervised by medical staff.

In most residential programs, medications are normally administered under direct supervision.

Another document shows that staff identified mental health concerns shortly after Shawn arrived.

A referral was submitted listing sleep problems and anxiety.

However, the records do not show that the referral was ever completed or that a full evaluation took place.

At the same time, Shawn was still going through the initial intake process.

Medical screenings were still being conducted.

Lab work was still being processed.

Several intake procedures had not yet been completed.

In other words, the system that was supposed to evaluate and protect him was still in progress when his life ended.

The drug testing records raise additional questions. Shawn was given a drug screening when he arrived.

The results from that entry test showed methamphetamine present, but no fentanyl detected.

However, later toxicology reports reportedly reference fentanyl-related compounds.

This difference between tests raises important questions about when and how exposure may have occurred.

Another critical detail in the records is the timing of the lab results.

The drug test collected when Shawn arrived was not finalized until February 27.

The medical record itself notes that Shawn had already died before those results were completed.

This means the positive result was not known to staff while he was alive.

Other issues involves where Shawn was and who was supervising him.

The official timeline completed by staff includes specific times showing Shawn in the lobby area late at night.

However, statements from student witnesses describe events differently and suggest a sequence of events that does not fully match the staff timeline.

These conflicting accounts raise important questions about what actually happened during those hours and who was present.

Another area of concern involves medical documentation and physical condition after death.

According to the autopsy documentation, rigor mortis findings indicate a certain stage of the body after death.

However, some witness accounts describe Shawn as still being up, moving, or interacting at times that may not fully align with those medical indicators.

Understanding the exact timeline of those events is critical to determining when Shawn actually died and what occurred beforehand.

The medical records from intake also raise questions.

Finally, as the records are reviewed more closely, additional questions about supervision remain.

Residential programs like Job Corps typically have structured curfews and monitoring procedures.

Yet questions remain about where Shawn was, who was supervising students, and what happened in the hours leading up to his death.

These are questions that still need answers.

Every new document we review brings us closer to understanding what happened during those final hours.

But the more records we examine, the clearer it becomes that key details about Shawn’s time at the center remain unexplained.

Shawn was not just a file number in a system.

He was my son.

He was someone’s brother.

He was loved.

And he deserved to leave that program the same way he arrived — alive.

We will continue reviewing every document, every timeline entry, and every unanswered question until the full truth about Shawn’s death is known.
