Justice for Sana Yousaf – End Honor Killings in Pakistan

The Issue

To: The Prime Minister of Pakistan, the National Assembly, the Human Rights Commission of Pakistan, and all concerned authorities.

Subject: Urgent Call for Justice in the Murder of Sana Yousaf and Stronger Measures Against Honor Killings

We, the undersigned, express our profound grief and outrage over the tragic murder of 17-year-old TikTok influencer Sana Yousaf, who was shot dead in her Islamabad home on June 2, 2025. Sana was a beacon of courage and creativity, using her platform to promote women's rights, cultural heritage, and education. Her untimely death has not only robbed her family and fans of a promising young voice but has also highlighted the persistent threat of honor-based violence faced by women in Pakistan.

Case Overview:

Sana Yousaf was fatally shot by her cousin, Umar Hayat, after multiple rejections of his advances. Despite the tragic nature of this event, initial reports suggested the possibility of an honor killing. However, police investigations have indicated that the motive was personal, stemming from repeated rejections by Sana.

The Broader Issue: Honour Killings in Pakistan

While this particular case may not be classified as an honor killing, it underscores a disturbing pattern of violence against women in Pakistan. According to the Human Rights Commission of Pakistan, over 470 cases of honor killings were reported in 2021 alone, with human rights defenders estimating that around 1,000 women are murdered in the name of honor every year.

These killings are often justified by deeply ingrained societal beliefs about family dignity and shame, where the victim's death is seen as a way to restore the family's honor. Such practices not only violate fundamental human rights but also perpetuate a culture of impunity and gender-based violence.

Our Demands:

Immediate and Transparent Investigation: Ensure a thorough and impartial investigation into Sana Yousaf's murder, with the findings made publicly available.
Stronger Legal Framework: Enforce stricter laws against honor killings, with clear definitions and severe penalties for perpetrators.
Awareness and Education: Launch nationwide campaigns to educate the public about the detrimental effects of honor killings and promote gender equality.
Support for Victims: Establish support systems for women at risk, including shelters, legal aid, and counseling services.
Accountability: Hold accountable those who condone or justify honor killings, including through social media platforms.

Conclusion:

The murder of Sana Yousaf is a stark reminder of the dangers women face when they challenge societal norms. It is imperative that we, as a society, stand united against all forms of gender-based violence and work towards a future where women can live without fear.

We, the undersigned, call upon the Government of Pakistan, lawmakers, and all relevant authorities to take immediate action to ensure justice for Sana Yousaf and to eradicate the practice of honor killings from our society.
