Justice for Samir Suleiman Ali & Yasbirat Habtamu – A Preventable Tragedy

Justice for Samir Suleiman Ali & Yasbirat Habtamu – A Preventable Tragedy
The Issue
We are the grieving families of Samir Suleiman Ali (18) and Yasbirat Habtamu (17)—two beloved sons, brothers, and community role models whose lives were tragically taken on July 26, 2022, in New Westminster, BC.
Samir had just graduated with honors and was set to begin his studies at UBC on a full scholarship in Kinesiology. Yasbirat was an aspiring soccer player preparing for his final year of high school. They had bright futures, stolen from them in an instant.
🚨 What Happened? 🚨
🔹 Cory Robert Brown, 28, was escaping police, driving at 165 km/h in a 50 km/h zone when he crashed into the teens’ car.
🔹 Brown had been banned from driving for 7 years due to previous dangerous driving convictions.
🔹 Metro Vancouver Transit Police pursued Brown at 124 km/h in a 50 km/h zone, escalating the danger.
🔹 Even after being released on bail, Brown continued breaking the law, committing more driving offenses and carrying a prohibited weapon.
🚨 Why This Matters 🚨
🔹 The Independent Investigations Office (IIO) cleared the officer, despite serious concerns about the high-speed police pursuit.
🔹 The Office of the Police Complaint Commissioner (OPCC) promised a six-month investigation, yet the findings have not been released.
🔹 The officer involved was never suspended or disciplined and continues to work.
🔹 A reckless, banned driver was allowed to keep breaking the law, leading to this preventable tragedy.
What We Demand
✅ Immediate release of the OPCC’s investigation findings: families deserve answers NOW.
✅ Accountability for the officer involved: reckless high-speed chases at night in urban areas must have consequences.
✅ Stronger enforcement of driving bans: repeat offenders should not be on the road.
✅ Reforms in police pursuit policies to prevent future tragedies.
