Justice For Picotine, Quebec’s Peanut and Fred!
The Issue
Picotine was a deer who was rescued by a farm sanctuary in Quebec. But, like Peanut Squirrel and Fred Raccoon, Picotine was seized by the Ministry of Wildlife, killed, and her brain was dissected for testing, despite there being non lethal tests for Chronic Wasting Disease. Antemortem testing for chronic wasting disease (CWD) can help prevent the spread of the disease in both farmed and wild cervids. CWD is a fatal prion disease that affects deer, elk, and moose. Some methods for antemortem CWD testing include:
Real-time quaking-induced conversion (RT-QuIC)
This assay can be used on rectal biopsy specimens and other antemortem samples. One study found that RT-QuIC had a sensitivity of 69.8% and a specificity of over 93.9%. Another study found that RT-QuIC was more sensitive than IHC in blinded testing. Skin samples from the ear and belly can be used to diagnose CWD. One study found that both ear and belly skin samples had a diagnostic sensitivity of 95% and a diagnostic specificity of 100%. This assay can detect CWD prions in antemortem samples like rectal biopsy specimens and nasal brush collections. RT-QuIC has been shown to be more sensitive than postmortem testing. Skin samples from the ear or belly can also be used for antemortem CWD diagnosis.
Trained detection dogs
Dogs can be trained to differentiate between CWD-positive and CWD-negative white-tailed deer feces. Dogs can be effective at wildlife surveys, and can find CWD-positive samples in the field.
We would like Quebec to stop killing animals and create a law to prevent authorities from stealing and killing animals from rescues.
Take the time to read this beautiful message that the neighbour wrote ❤️❤️❤️It described so much our Picotine that was killed RIP my beautiful Picotine😢Thank you Rachel for this beautiful text💔💔
One day I saw you on my field, lying down
in the grass, fragile little thing with your big beautiful eyes you looked at me I looked at you I wondered what you were doing all alone without your mom... then the days passed you were walking from field to field alone... all the people in the estate are getting worried with winter coming that you can't survive without your mum to feed you... then we saw you trying to leave with a herd of deer but it was difficult they rejected you you left 2 sem we were worried but you came back to us saying these two legged people weren't so bad after all and that with them you had food water and shelter! This is when our story began... you brought the most beautiful side of man, the one of love, of sharing kindness, you learned to trust us and we learned to know you, to protect you and to appreciate your presence allowed us, even though you ate all my tulips 🤪 we we have watched you grow and realized you were different than what we thought but we loved you at first sight, we enjoyed every visit you made, the privileged moments we spent in your presence are etched in our heads. I have a great pain, knowing that your last moments of life were in fear, fear of those two-legged people you trusted, fear because you were chased with the purpose of killing yourself!!! But know my beautiful that beyond that you were loved very much and you will forever be in our hearts! You did nothing wrong beautiful just being in the wrong place at the wrong time. Now you're riding in heaven with horses, your loyal friends, with whom you loved to play and spend time... I love you beautiful 😘
