Justice for North Salt Lake Police Dog Left to Die

Justice for North Salt Lake Police Dog Left to Die
The Issue
In North Salt Lake, a police therapy dog in training died after being left inside a police officer’s vehicle. Officials believe the dog’s death was caused by heat-related illness. This dog had not yet officially joined the department but was already being prepared for service to the community — a future cut short by negligence.
Police Chief Craig Black confirmed the tragedy but has withheld details about the officer involved, saying the Davis County Sheriff’s Office is investigating. While the investigation is ongoing, one fact is undeniable: this dog should still be alive today. Leaving an animal in a hot vehicle is a crime when committed by civilians. It cannot be treated differently because the person responsible wears a badge.
The public deserves transparency. The family of this dog deserves accountability. And future police animals deserve stronger protections so this never happens again. Therapy dogs and K-9s are more than tools — they are living beings trained to serve our communities. Their safety must be guaranteed by the very departments that rely on them.
We call on North Salt Lake Mayor Brian Horrocks, the North Salt Lake City Council, and Police Chief Craig Black to take immediate action. They must ensure a full, public investigation into the dog’s death, release the findings to the community, and hold the responsible officer accountable. They must also implement stronger safeguards for all police animals, including mandatory training for handlers, vehicle safety protocols, and consequences for neglect.
This tragedy should not fade into silence. A life was lost — a dog who was meant to heal and protect people. If the public cannot trust the police department to care for its own therapy dog, how can it trust the department’s commitment to safety and compassion?
Sign if you believe North Salt Lake must deliver justice for this dog and enact reforms to protect all service animals.
