On July 4, 2026, 18-year-old Nolan Xavier Wells joined a group of friends for a boat trip to Horn Island, a remote barrier island off the Mississippi Gulf Coast. His friends all returned home that evening. Nolan did not.

After two days of searching that captured national attention, his body was found on the island. His mother, Christine Wonsley, identified her son. "My heart is broken for my sweet son," she wrote. No cause of death has been determined. The investigation, Jackson County Sheriff John Ledbetter says, is "still very active."

Nolan was Black. The three other men on the boat were white. That fact ,visible in photos Wonsley shared on Facebook, has prompted serious questions that demand serious answers.

We are not prejudging what happened. We are demanding that every resource and every authority be applied to finding out.

When a young Black man is found dead under unclear circumstances after being separated from white companions, history gives us too many reasons to distrust investigations conducted without independent oversight. Too many families have learned what it means when accountability is left solely to local authorities.

Nolan was 18. He would have turned 19 next month. He was a college freshman at Southwest Mississippi Community College. He was, in his mother's words, "a special soul — God took his time creating our son."

His family deserves the full truth, not just a local inquiry, but federal civil rights oversight and complete transparency at every step.
