Justice for Nigerian Women – End Political Suppression & Protect Nigeria
The Issue
To: The United Nations, Inter-Parliamentary Union, Amnesty International, UN Women, African Union, and Global Human Rights Advocates
We, the undersigned, stand in fierce solidarity with Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan and all Nigerian women who face oppression, silencing, and systemic injustice. This petition is a cry for justice, a demand for accountability, and a global call to action to end the suppression of women in Nigeria’s political and social spaces.
A Battle Beyond Natasha – The Systematic Silencing of Nigerian Women
Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan, a duly elected lawmaker, has been unjustly suspended from the Nigerian Senate for six months for gross misconduct. This happened after she accused Senate President Godswill Akpabio of sexual harassment—a courageous act that many women fear due to intimidation, retaliation, and public shaming.
Her suspension is not just about one woman. It is a direct attack on women in leadership, a warning to female voices in power, and a glaring reminder of Nigeria’s deeply entrenched patriarchy. This is about every Nigerian woman—the university female student pressured by lecturers for sexual favors to graduate, the job-seeking female graduate forced to compromise for employment, the corporate executive denied equal pay, the schoolgirl silenced, the politician fighting for a voice in a system designed to break her, and the market trader who faces daily harassment.
A Country Where Women Are Seen, But Not Heard
Nigeria is a nation where men control nearly every aspect of life—government, business, law, and even the fate of women themselves. Women are expected to be silent, to endure injustice, and to accept oppression as the norm. Even grassroots women—those in the villages, markets, and local businesses—depend on men for survival, leaving them with little power to challenge the system.
The suspension of Natasha is not an isolated case. This is the story of every Nigerian woman who has been dismissed, overlooked, and silenced. When women speak up, they are branded as troublemakers. When they demand justice, they are threatened or removed. This is modern-day political slavery, and it must end!
A Judiciary in Shackles – Where Is Justice?
Nigeria’s legal system is compromised, corrupt, and weaponized against the weak. Even when courts have ruled against Senate suspensions in the past, the current ruling class manipulates judges and bends the law to serve their interests. If justice cannot be found within Nigeria, we must take this fight to the global stage.
We Demand International Action!
We call on the United Nations, the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU), Amnesty International, UN Women, the African Union, and all global defenders of justice to:
Investigate Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan’s suspension and ensure a fair and transparent process.
Empower grassroots and urban women by funding independent female-led organizations fighting for justice.
Hold Nigerian authorities accountable to international laws protecting women’s rights.
Sanction the Nigerian government for suppressing women in politics and violating international human rights standards.
Cut aid and diplomatic support to institutions that enable gender-based oppression in Nigeria.
This is a call for justice, not just for Natasha, but for every Nigerian woman who has been silenced, oppressed, and stripped of her dignity.
The world must not stand by as women are erased from leadership and denied their rightful place in society. The time for action is NOW! Accelerate action for women.
SIGN & SHARE – Let’s show Nigeria and the world that we will not be silent!
