Justice for Mountain Lion Killed: Build Safe Wildlife Crossings in LA County
The Issue
On August 7, 2026, a young mountain lion, one to three years old, was found badly injured in a San Dimas neighborhood, with a fractured pelvis and bruised lungs consistent with being hit by a car.
California Department of Fish and Wildlife staff and San Dimas sheriff's deputies tranquilized him, but the damage was too severe. "Due to the severity of the injuries, the veterinarian recommended humane euthanasia."
He didn't survive.
This wasn't a freak accident. Vehicle collisions are a leading cause of wildlife deaths in Los Angeles County, and mountain lions, who need room to roam, are especially at risk. Roads slice through the wild spaces these animals need to move, hunt, and find mates, forcing them into traffic instead.
Wildlife crossings already work: bridges and underpasses built for animals cut collisions and reconnect fragmented habitat wherever they're built. Los Angeles County doesn't have enough of them in foothill communities like San Dimas.
The Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors, Caltrans, and CDFW can identify high-risk corridors and fund crossings there.
Sign the petition to demand wildlife crossings in LA County's mountain lion corridors — before another cat pays the price for our roads.
