Justice For Mihiran, Demanding Financial Compensation From Arimac

Justice For Mihiran, Demanding Financial Compensation From Arimac

The Issue

Our beloved friend Mihiran Chathuranga committed suicide due to work pressure while working as a Support / DevOps Engineer in Arimac.
The company agreed to do their best to support his family, yet didn't take any action towards helping his family to this date. We demand Arimac be responsible and make fair financial compensation towards Mihiran's Family.

Three weeks ago, on February 6th, 2023, we reached out to Arimac, as Mihiran's former batch mates, with the intention of requesting financial compensation for Mihiran's family. We hoped for a positive response from Arimac.

Dear Sir / Madam,

We are writing to bring to your attention the tragic loss of our beloved friend Mihiran and the support provided to his family. As graduates of the Faculty of IT, we are deeply saddened by this tragic incident and have maintained close contact with Mihiran's family to offer our support in any way possible.

We understand that Mr. Chamira Jyasinghe, Mr. Dulanjana Silva, and Mr. Indike Gunathilake have met with Mihiran's family a couple of times on behalf of the company, and we appreciate your efforts to provide support and express your concerns. We also appreciate that the Arimac Welfare Society has contributed financially to Mihiran's funeral and that the company has agreed to continue Mihiran's remaining salary until the end of February, until the end of his notice period.

However, we have several concerns that we would like to bring to your attention and request your assistance in addressing. Specifically, we request that the company:

1. Validity of the statements made publically by Arimac

Clarify the statements made publicly by the company on social media and provide a more accurate and empathetic portrayal of the situation. We were disappointed by the initial post made by the company on social media, which we felt was more concerned with defending the company's reputation rather than genuinely caring about the situation and how to help Mihiran's family. We were also concerned by a post made by a third-party news channel, which included information from emails sent internally within the company (attached below, link: https://srilanka.factcrescendo.com/2022/12/05/explainer-on-viral-posts-after-the-suicide-of-it-engineer-mihiran/ We believe that this information was provided to the news channel by someone within the company, and we request that you take steps to address this breach of confidentiality. In addition, we request that you make a public statement acknowledging the tragedy and expressing your condolences and support for Mihiran's family.

2. Company's decision over the consideration of providing compensation for support to Mihiran's family members.

As a company, it is important to consider providing financial compensation to the family of Mihiran, who has recently passed away. This is a difficult time for the family, as they are not only dealing with the emotional loss of a loved one, but also potential financial strain. We understand that Mihiran's family may be facing challenges such as funeral expenses, loss of income, and other financial obligations. We believe that the company has a responsibility to provide support to the family during this difficult time. Providing financial compensation can help alleviate some of the financial burdens the family is facing and show empathy towards the situation.

3. Initiating active measures to be taken to prevent such incidents happen in future, and the contribution towards this initiative by Arimac.

Implement active measures to prevent similar incidents from occurring in the future, and communicate the steps being taken to ensure the safety and well-being of employees. We believe that the high work pressure and demands placed on Mihiran may have contributed to his tragic decision, and we request that the company take steps to address these issues and prevent similar tragedies from occurring in the future.

We understand that this is a difficult and sensitive matter, but we hope that you will take our concerns seriously and take action to address them. We are available to discuss these issues further and offer our support and assistance on behalf of Mihiran's family in any way possible.

Kind Regards.
