Justice for Michael Montoya: Demand Stronger Security in Arizona Schools

Justice for Michael Montoya: Demand Stronger Security in Arizona Schools
The Issue
On August 19, 16-year-old Michael Montoya II was stabbed to death inside a classroom at Maryvale High School in Phoenix. According to police reports, the attack happened in front of students during school hours—and the weapon, a 4-inch pocketknife, was carried into school undetected.
Now, one family is grieving a life cut short. And one community is left with a haunting question: how could this have been allowed to happen?
Students deserve to feel safe in the classroom. Parents deserve to drop their children off without fear that they might not come home. The tragic death of Michael Montoya was not just a random act—it was a wake-up call about the gaps in our school safety systems.
We call on the Phoenix Union High School District Board and the Arizona Department of Education to immediately take action to protect students. This includes:
- Installing walk-through metal detectors at all entrances in Arizona high schools
- Expanding school security staffing to include trained, trauma-informed officers
- Creating a district-wide violence prevention and threat reporting system
These are basic protections. If they had been in place, Michael might still be alive today.
No one solution can prevent all violence. But right now, schools in Arizona are not doing enough. Michael's story must not be just another headline. It should be the reason real changes are finally made.
We owe it to his memory—and to every student sitting in a classroom right now—to act with urgency.
Sign this petition to demand that school and state leaders implement stronger safety measures, including metal detectors, before another tragedy takes place.
