“Justice for Louie: Pets Are Family, Not Property
The Issue
My 2-year-old puppy, Louie, was more than just a pet — he was my family. I trusted my veterinarian to care for him, but because of careless and negligent decisions, Louie's health declined and he lost his life far too young. The pain of losing him is something I carry every day.
What makes it even harder is knowing that in the eyes of the law, Louie was considered only "property." That means the vet who made mistakes that cost him his life will face little to no accountability. To me, and to so many others who have endured similar losses, pets are not just property — they are beloved family members who deserve respect and protection.
Each year, pet owners like myself spend thousands of dollars at veterinary clinics to care for our beloved companions. We put our trust in veterinary professionals, expecting them to treat our pets with the utmost care. However, under current laws, veterinarians are rarely held accountable for negligent decisions that result in suffering or death.
According to the American Pet Products Association, over 70% of U.S. households own a pet, which translates to more than 90 million families affected by the laws governing pet ownership and veterinary care. Despite this enormous impact, the legal system has lagged behind in recognizing pets as more than mere property.
We need strong legislation that holds veterinarians to higher standards, ensuring that they are held accountable for their actions. This is not just about seeking justice for our furry family members — it’s about ensuring quality care and preventing future negligence.
We urge lawmakers to introduce and pass legislation that:
1. Redefines pets in the legal system to reflect their status as family members.
2. Establishes clear accountability and repercussions for veterinary malpractice.
3. Creates an independent review board to oversee veterinary conduct.
4. Provides pet owners with access to justice and appropriate compensation in cases of negligence.
By signing this petition, you are standing up for the rights and protection of our animal companions. Let’s hold veterinarians accountable and ensure that our pets receive the respect and care they truly deserve. Please sign and share this petition to bring about much-needed change.
