Justice for Lost Loved Ones: Demand Safety Improvements for Boat Club Road
The Issue
Our Tragedy
On the evening of February 3, 2025, our community was shattered. Solomon Alejandro Sanchez, a beloved son, brother, grandson, uncle, godfather, and friend, was tragically taken from us. Solomon’s life was cut short on Boat Club Road by the combined actions of a wrong-way driver and a distracted driver.
Solomon is not the only one. Too many families have endured the unimaginable pain of losing loved ones on this residential road. These unnecessary tragedies are not just "accidents", they are the result of critical, preventable safety hazards that demand immediate action.
The Growing Crisis in Tarrant County: Building on Tarrant County Initiatives
Our community recognizes that local leaders are beginning to address this escalating crisis, as showcased by the late 2025 launch of "Operation: Safe City, Dangerous Roads" by Sheriff Bill Waybourn and Fort Worth Police Chief Eddie Garcia. By the end of 2025, Tarrant County was on track to report 234 traffic fatalities, a devastating increase from the 205 deaths recorded just one year prior. Sheriff Waybourn has been clear that the root causes of these tragedies, such as speeding, distraction, and intoxication, are "100% preventable," yet they continue to claim lives like Solomon’s. While we stand behind law enforcement’s commitment to holding reckless drivers accountable, we must also heed Chief Garcia’s warning that such operations are a "reduction strategy, not an elimination strategy." To truly eliminate these deaths, our leaders must look beyond driver behavior and address the dangerous physical environment of Boat Club Road that allows these preventable deaths.
Identifying Hazards on Boat Club Road
According to the Texas Department of Transportation, in 2025 Tarrant County has already seen over 26,000 crashes and 151 traffic fatalities. Current projections indicate that the county was expected to see a 14% increase in fatal accidents by the end of 2025. On Boat Club Road alone, records also show data spanning from 2016 through 2025:
- 782 Total Crashes: In just ten years, nearly 800 accidents have occurred on Boat Club Road.
- 2,188 Lives Impacted: These crashes involved 1,641 vehicles and put 2,188 people, our neighbors, children, and friends in direct harm's way.
- 12 Fatalities: Twelve families have been forever changed by loss on this road, including one horrific collision that claimed two lives at once.
We cannot allow Boat Club Road to continue to be a contributing factor to these devastating statistics. These numbers represent real people, real families, and preventable losses.
Boat Club Road is an important road for our community, stretching from Jacksboro Hwy to Bonds Ranch Rd. It is a shared space where we live. Boat Club Road is utilized as a commutable road to head to work, go to school, attend church, and drop our children off at daycare.
Despite being a high-density residential area, the road conditions are dangerously inconsistent:
- Inconsistent Speeds: Speed limits fluctuate wildly between 30 mph and 60 mph, creating confusion and dangerous driving conditions.
- Inadequate Visibility: Minimal lighting makes nighttime travel dangerous for both drivers and pedestrians.
- Hazardous Curves & Signage: Specific sections, particularly near Lea Crest, the lake curves, and the stretches beyond the end of the road, lack the necessary speed reductions and safety warnings to prevent lane departures and collisions.
- Insufficient Median & Road Protection: Current infrastructure fails to prevent wrong-way entry, a growing national crisis that claims 350 lives annually in the U.S., according to the National Transportation Safety Board.
Our Demands for Change
To honor Solomon’s memory and protect the thousands of families who travel this road daily, we call upon the local governments and transportation authorities to implement the following measures without delay:
- Uniform Speed Limits & Traffic Calming: Establish a consistent, safer speed limit for the entire length of Boat Club Road, with mandatory, well-signaled speed reductions at the Lea Crest and lake curves.
- Additional Lighting: Install high-visibility street lighting along the entire length of Boat Club Road to eliminate dark zones.
- Enhanced Signage & Reflective Markings: Install "Wrong-Way" LED warning lights, reflective road markings, and rumble strips at all critical entry points and medians to alert drivers immediately.
- Median & Infrastructure: Conduct a safety review of current medians to ensure they are designed to prevent wrong-way entry rather than creating obstacles for safe travel.
- Public Awareness: Launch a city-wide campaign focused on the dangers of distracted and wrong-way driving in residential areas.
Call to Action
We are not just asking for road repairs; we are asking for the right to travel through our own neighborhood without fearing for our lives. We refuse to let Solomon’s death be just another statistic. We demand that our leaders take action so that no other family has to continue to experience the heartbreak we feel today.
Thank you for your time, and we ask our community to help us to ensure a safer Boat Club Road for everyone by signing this petition.
