Justice for Jay - young cat brutally murdered in Centralia, WA

The Issue

On Thursday, April 28th 2016, an innocent cat named “Baby Jay” was brutally beaten, stabbed, and stoned in front of a group of children in Centralia, WA. We demand those individuals who took part in his excruciating death be held accountable. Jay’s only fault was being in the wrong place at the wrong time. At around 7pm on April 28th, 2016, three young girls got into an argument. One 11 year old took it out on Jay. Grabbing him by his neck, she squeezed it until it popped. The girl passed Jay’s body to her mother on their 2nd story balcony, where she had been observing her daughter’s violent acts below. The mother’s reaction was to forcefully throw Jay to the ground, where he remained in agonizing pain.  Instead of finding out if he could be helped,  the 11 year old dropped a large rock onto Jay’s head. The mother’s boyfriend and another male friend rushed from their apartment, joking and fighting over who got to stab the cat first. According to witnesses, the boyfriend stabbed Jay in his head before kicking him halfway under a nearby fence. Several neighbors came out of surrounding apartments to see what the commotion was about. Why children were screaming. Some went straight to Jay. He was still alive but his horrific wounds were too much and he finally succumbed. This family murdered Jay, and left him to die a very slow and agonizing death. Centralia PD's Officer Will Phillips arrived on the scene about 30 minutes after the initial call. Upon arrival, he spoke to witnesses, took their statements, and arrested the boyfriend. When one of the neighbors asked what to do with Jay’s remains, she was told to just put him in a box and throw him in the dumpster. It didn't seem right, but she complied, wrapping his body in a towel. Later, Jay’s body was recovered. Joint Animal Services performed a necropsy the next day. Results were consistent with the violence done to him. Neighborhood children who witnessed this horrific crime remain traumatized. Many fear for their safety, as well as their pets’. Because Phillips did not take Jay’s remains as evidence at the time of the boyfriend’s arrest, the Prosecuting Attorney could not charge him with any crime at his initial hearing. The boyfriend claimed he was attempting to end Jays suffering, so he was released and the case closed. Please help us be a voice for this small, sweet cat. Demand the police take another look at witness statements and any items taken from the scene. Tell them they must consider the evidence from the necropsy. Charge everyone who played a part in Jay’s death. Please sign and share this petition in support for obtaining Justice for Jay.
