Justice for Javier Ordóñez

Justice for Javier Ordóñez

The Issue

On Wednesday, September 9, 2020, a 44-year old man named Javier Ordóñez was killed by police in Bogotá, Colombia. Javier worked as a taxi driver while studying in law and aeronautics. He was a father of two boys, one age 15 and the other age 11. His mother lives in Barcelona, Spain and one of his brothers living in Argentina.

It was in the early morning on that Wednesday when police pulled Ordóñez over for passing a curfew implemented to prevent the spread of coronavirus. Eventually, the cops started to restrain him and tasering him constantly. According to a video footage on Twitter, Ordóñez is seen being detained and tased by police while screaming out “Please, please, no more!”. Witnesses in the scene were also saying the same thing “Please, do not do this anymore!”. Moments later, Ordóñez became unconscious, was sent to the hospital, and later died. After the news was released, this has led to outburst to the entire capital of Colombia. Protests and riots are currently filling Bogotá, leaving so far five people dead, more than 140 injured, and more than half the capital city in destruction. Many people are left in shock and anger about what happened. Some have also compared Ordóñez’s death with George Floyd’s death, an African American man who was killed by police with a knee on his neck shouting “I can’t breathe!” for 8 minutes and 46 seconds a few months ago.

To note, I am not from an organization of any sort. If you are from any organization and if you would like to make a FundMe for him or do anything to help out his family and such, all credit goes to you for creating it. And so, hopefully for each signature, a donation can be made towards his family.

I know there is too much going on this year already with the coronavirus pandemic. However, as an American, we in the United States are too familiar with this pandemic of police brutality. It has gone to the point that even the entire world has supported our country to fight for justice. Now it is our time to give back do the same for Colombia. I am asking you to please help me and to help others sign this petition to not only seek justice for Javier Ordóñez, but to also help and comfort his family and friends, as well as to seek justice for Colombia and all of those that are going through the pandemic of police brutality and immortal acts in general.
