Justice for Icelandic Polar Bear Shot By Police

Justice for Icelandic Polar Bear Shot By Police
The Issue
The recent police shooting of a polar bear was completely unacceptable. The complainant was the only person still in the summer cottages, and the complainant was safely inside their home at the time of the complaint. The bear was rummaging through unsecured garbage, a problem that can be solved with bear proof bins. Polar bears are now exterminated once again in Iceland, thanks to an outdated 15 year old policy by the EAI to shoot polar bears instead of relocating, mostly due to money. Well, now polar bears are eradicated in Iceland, simply because of human laziness. Please change the polar bear conflict response from shoot the bear to a proactive mandate on bear proof garbage and recycling bins, hazing programs for polar bears who show up in populated areas, a rescue and relocation program for polar bears who are truly lost in an urban environment (this can be funded through a not for profit organization), a proper definition of threat assessment (this polar bear was a “nuisance” bear, not likely a threat), and a decision to no longer shoot bears. Police could have simply waited until the bear left, or used a hazing technique to promote the bear to leave on their own. Police in York Region, Ontario Canada, decided to no longer shoot wildlife in 2016. This paved the way for a humane non lethal response by the city. Police and conservation officers could make the same choices and choose compassionate actions.
