The Issue

I am asking for support from everyone concerning the horses intentionally shot at Shangri-La Animal Sanctuary in Dorchester County, SC. The Sanctuary is nestled on 120 acres of land in St. George. Marcy Hippey, owner and rescuer, heard multiple gunshots ring out on July 29, 2023. She yelled out for the shooter to stop firing. She checked pastures and found nothing at the time, assuming the horses were startled by the close by gun shots.

•"Hooker", a 3 year old mare, was rescued with a broken leg. While recovering she was shot in the opposite shoulder. She was non weight bearing from the time of being shot until her unfortunate and untimely euthanization on August 7, 23. Her broken leg could not support the weight of her body and she sustained major nerve damage in the shoulder that was shot.

•"Charlotte", a 30 year old mare, was shot 8 times. 3 times in the head and 5 times in the abdomen. She was found deceased in her pasture. It is unknown how long she lay alive while suffering.

•"Pepsi" was shot in the head but miraculously survived though she had to receive immediate surgery to remove her injured eye.

•Millie, another mare, sustained multiple injuries and is still recovering.

•Ginger, a goat, was also killed.

The shooter, a 9 year old neighbor boy, was found to be using these animals as target practice.

Dorchester County Sheriff's Office has declined to press charges against the grandparents/guardians of the boy. The fact that this child obtained and used a weapon against defenseless animals that were in their pastures and the blatent cruelty to animals being dismissed is inexcusable.

Please reach out to DCSO to express your concern at their lack of obtaining justice for these animals. Children that are cruel and abusive to animals are more likely to be cruel to humans as they age. This is the making of a serial killer. Please press the DCSO to hold the  grandparents accountable for allowing the boy access to a firearm without supervision and allowing him to intentionally shoot at animals. Justice needs to be served for these animals.
